If you’re wondering about the best things to do in Grand Baie, you might be tempted to think it’s all about beautiful beaches and lazy days by the sea. And honestly, that’s not a bad way to spend your time here. But Grand Baie has much more to offer.

From quiet coves and long stretches of white sand to boat trips, snorkeling, great food, and some of the best sunsets in northern Mauritius, Grand Baie makes a fantastic base for exploring the island’s north.

I’ve put together this guide to the best things to do in Grand Baie and around it, including the places I enjoyed most and a few experiences you shouldn’t miss if you’re staying in this part of Mauritius.

Relax at La Cuvette Beach

If you’re looking for a quiet place to slow down in Grand Baie, La Cuvette Beach is one of my favorite spots. Tucked away just a short walk from the center of town, it feels surprisingly peaceful despite being so close to everything.

The water here is calm and inviting. I would say it is a lovely spot for a swim or a little snorkeling. There are also some beautiful corals to explore. Though you’ll want to watch your step around the sea urchins. I’d definitely recommend wearing water shoes.

What I love most about La Cuvette, though, is the atmosphere. There’s something about this little beach that keeps bringing me back. Maybe it’s the soft light or the relaxed vibe. Or maybe the fact that it never feels quite as crowded as some of the bigger beaches. Or simply the way the beach is tucked between the rocks and the sea.

You’ll also find a few food stalls nearby, which makes it easy to grab something local while you’re here. Freshly grilled seafood, dholl puri and gateaux piment are some of the Mauritian treats you can try.

Tip: If you’re looking for one of the best places to watch the sunset in Grand Baie, come to La Cuvette in the late afternoon. Head towards the left side of the beach, where you can find a quieter spot away from the crowds. Watching the sun go down over the water from here is one of those simple Grand Baie moments I wouldn’t skip.

Spend Time at Grand Baie Public Beach

Right in the heart of Grand Baie, you’ll find the beach that gives the town much of its postcard-like charm. Grand Baie Public Beach is smaller and livelier than some of the beaches around the north, but that’s also part of what makes it fun.

This is a great place to simply spend a few hours by the water, watch the boats coming and going from the bay, or grab something to eat from one of the nearby food stalls. The turquoise water and the palm trees make it hard not to stop for a photo, even if you’re only passing through.

I particularly like the atmosphere here. It feels much more connected to Grand Baie itself than the quieter beaches nearby. Here locals and tourists share the same stretch of sand and the bay is constantly buzzing with activity.

If you’re staying in Grand Baie, this is one beach I’d definitely visit at least once. You don’t necessarily need to spend the whole day here. Come for a swim, walk along the waterfront, watch the boats, and then head into town for lunch or a coffee.

Tip: Come in the late afternoon when the heat starts to ease and stay for a while. The light gets beautiful towards sunset, and the combination of the boats, palm trees, and turquoise water makes this one of the nicest places to soak up the Grand Baie atmosphere.

Explore Grand Baie’s Waterfront & Town

Grand Baie is one of those places where you don’t really need a plan. Sometimes the best thing to do is simply walk around and see where the day takes you.

Start along the waterfront. There’s always something happening here. I loved watching the boats come and go while taking in the views across the lagoon.

From the waterfront, wander into town and explore the little shops, cafés, restaurants, and local stalls. Grand Baie has a much more lively feel than some of the quieter coastal villages in northern Mauritius. It’s a nice place to experience a bit of everyday island life alongside the tourist side of Mauritius.

You’ll probably notice that you keep stopping for photos, too. Between the turquoise water, colorful boats, palm trees, and the occasional glimpse of the lagoon through the streets, Grand Baie is surprisingly photogenic.

Tip: Don’t rush through Grand Baie. Set aside a couple of hours to walk along the waterfront, browse the shops, stop for a coffee or something to eat, and simply enjoy the atmosphere. It’s often these unplanned moments that make a place memorable.

Go Shopping in Grand Baie

If you feel like doing a little shopping, Grand Baie is a fun place to wander without having a strict plan. The streets around the center, particularly around the coastal road, Sunset Boulevard, and Super U Hypermarket, are filled with small shops, cafés, and local stalls.

Take your time and look around. You’ll find everything from handmade crafts and souvenirs to clothes, accessories, and little things you probably didn’t know you were looking for. It’s the kind of place where you can easily spend an hour just browsing.

One place you’ll likely come across is the Grand Baie Bazaar. Don’t expect to find rare treasures here, but it’s a good stop if you’re looking for affordable souvenirs, beachwear, accessories, or a few gifts to take home. And, honestly, part of the fun is simply wandering around and taking in the atmosphere.

I also enjoyed exploring the smaller streets around the main shopping areas. They have a more relaxed feel, with little cafés and shops tucked away from the busier waterfront.

Tip: Keep some room in your suitcase. Between the souvenirs, local crafts, beachwear, and the temptation to buy “just one more thing,” you might find more than you planned for!

Taste Your Way Through Grand Baie

Start with Breakfast

One thing I quickly noticed in Grand Baie is that breakfast is taken seriously. If you’re not in a hurry in the morning, treat yourself to a long breakfast or brunch. From avocado bagels and eggs cooked just about every way you can imagine to waffles, pancakes, muesli, and oatmeal bowls, there are plenty of tempting options.

Join a Local Food Tour

If you know me, you probably know that food is always part of my travel experience. And in Mauritius, there’s no shortage of things to try.

One of my favorite things to do in Grand Baie was joining a local food tour. Instead of simply sitting down at a restaurant, we wandered through the streets with a local guide, stopping at different places to taste traditional Mauritian food and drinks.

We tried a variety of local dishes and street food, while our guide shared stories about the food, the town, and everyday life in Mauritius. I loved that the tour took us beyond the main tourist areas and into the back streets of Grand Baie, including a visit to one of the town’s oldest buildings.

For me, though, the food tour was the more memorable experience because it gave me a chance to see a different side of Grand Baie while tasting my way through it.

Join a Full-Day Catamaran Cruise to the Northern Isles

If there’s one experience I would definitely add to your Grand Baie itinerary, it’s a full-day catamaran cruise to the Northern Isles. We did this during our time in Mauritius, and it turned out to be one of those days that felt like a holiday within the holiday.

The cruise takes you out into the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, with plenty of time to swim, snorkel, relax on the boat, and simply enjoy the views.

The first stop is usually Flat Island, where you’ll find soft white sand, clear water, and beautiful coral reefs. After some time on the island, you’ll head back to the catamaran for a BBQ lunch.

From there, the cruise continues to Gabriel Island, another beautiful spot where you can swim, snorkel, or simply find a place in the sun and enjoy the scenery.

On the way back to Grand Baie, there’s usually another snorkeling stop around Coin de Mire. The underwater scenery here is beautiful, and it’s a great way to finish a full day out on the water.

What I loved about this trip was that it never felt rushed. There was a nice balance between exploring the islands, snorkeling, eating, and simply lying back on the catamaran with nothing to do but watch the ocean.

Experience Grand Baie’s Nightlife

Grand Baie doesn’t go to sleep when the sun goes down. In fact, this is when the town starts to take on a different atmosphere.

The waterfront and streets around the center come alive with restaurants, bars, cafés, and places to enjoy a drink after a day at the beach. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed dinner by the water, cocktails with friends, live music, or a livelier night out, Grand Baie has plenty of options.

You don’t necessarily have to go clubbing to enjoy the evening here. I’d simply recommend heading into town after sunset, taking a walk along the waterfront, and seeing what catches your eye. Grand Baie is one of the best places in northern Mauritius to enjoy a little evening atmosphere.

Tip: If nightlife isn’t really your thing, don’t skip Grand Baie after dark. A relaxed dinner, a drink by the waterfront, or an evening stroll is more than enough to experience the town’s lively side.

Why Choose Grand Baie as Your Base?

If you’re planning to explore northern Mauritius, Grand Baie makes a very convenient base. We stayed here for a few nights and found it easy to combine relaxing days by the beach with exploring the surrounding area by car.

One of the biggest advantages is location. You’re close to some of the north’s most beautiful beaches, while places like Péreybère, Bain Boeuf, Cap Malheureux, and Mont Choisy are all within easy reach.

There’s also plenty to do once you’re back in town. Grand Baie has a good choice of restaurants, cafés, shops, bars, and boat trips, so you’re never too far from somewhere to eat or something to do.

For me, that’s what makes Grand Baie such a good base: you get the convenience of a lively coastal town without giving up easy access to the quieter and more beautiful corners of northern Mauritius.

How to Get Around Grand Baie

How you get around Grand Baie really depends on how much of northern Mauritius you want to explore. If you’re planning to stick mostly to the town, you can get around without a car. But if you want to visit the beaches and attractions beyond Grand Baie, having your own wheels makes things much easier.

Getting to Grand Baie by rental car

This is how we explored northern Mauritius, and for us, renting a car was the easiest option. We picked up our car at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport and drove to Grand Baie.

Having a car gave us the freedom to explore the best things to do in Grand Baie and the surrounding area at our own pace. We could stop at different beaches, change our plans when we wanted, and easily explore places further along the northern coast.

Driving in Mauritius is on the left-hand side of the road, so keep that in mind if you’re not used to it. Once you get the hang of it, though, driving around the island is fairly straightforward.

Getting to Grand Baie by public transportation

Mauritius has an extensive bus network, and buses connect Grand Baie with other parts of the island. They’re an inexpensive way to get around, but they can be slower than having your own car, especially if you want to visit several places in one day.

If you’re staying in Grand Baie and mainly want to enjoy the town, beaches, restaurants, and nightlife, public transportation can work perfectly well. For exploring more of northern Mauritius, however, I’d choose a rental car.

Getting around with a private driver

Another option is hiring a private driver for the day. This can be a good choice if you don’t want to drive yourself but still want to explore beyond Grand Baie.

Where to Stay in Grand Baie

Grand Baie is one of the best places to stay in northern Mauritius if you want to be close to beaches, restaurants, shops, boat trips, and nightlife. It also makes a convenient base if you’re planning to explore more of the north by car.

We stayed in the Grand Baie area for a few nights while exploring northern Mauritius, and it worked really well as a base.

If you’re looking for something more affordable than the big luxury resorts, I’d also consider staying in nearby Péreybère. It’s only a short drive from Grand Baie, but has a more relaxed beach-town feel.

Located on a peninsula near Grand Baie, Canonnier is a good option for families looking for a beachfront resort with plenty of activities and family-friendly facilities.

For staying close to the center: Mauricia Beachcomber Resort & Spa

Located in the heart of Grand Baie, the Mauricia is a convenient choice if you want restaurants, shops, nightlife, and the waterfront right outside your door.

Where we stayed: Le Beachclub

We stayed at Le Beachclub in Péreybère and really liked it as a base for exploring the north. The property is right on Péreybère Beach. It offers apartments and villas, some with sea views and kitchenettes. It’s around 2 km from the center of Grand Baie, so you’re close enough to enjoy everything the town has to offer while staying in a quieter beachfront setting.

A more affordable alternative: La Perla Holiday Apartments

If you’re looking for a simpler and more budget-friendly option, La Perla Holiday Apartments is another place worth checking out. Located in Péreybère, it offers self-catering apartments with kitchens, balconies, free Wi-Fi, and parking. Péreybère Beach is just a short walk away, and the property is surrounded by restaurants, shops, and other everyday conveniences.

You can spend the morning relaxing at La Cuvette, wander through town, stop for a long breakfast, enjoy some local food, and finish the day watching the sunset by the water. And when you feel like exploring further, some of the most beautiful places in northern Mauritius are just a short drive away.

So, is Grand Baie worth visiting? Absolutely. Whether you come for the beaches, the food, the lively atmosphere, or simply because you want a convenient base for exploring the north, Grand Baie is a place I’d happily return to.
