1. Explore the Quiet City of Rasnov, One of My Favorite Day Trips from Brasov

Distance: 20 kilometers, 30 minutes drive one way

Rasnov is a typical Romanian provincial town, with not much going on but still with enough things to do.

Start your day with an easy hike to the Rasnov Citadel and admire the views over the city. The impressive 13th-century fortress is built on top of a mountain 200 meters above the town. It dominates Rasnov’s skyline, a great example of a fort made to protect the community during an invasion.

After reaching the top, follow the path to the entrance. For a small fee, you can explore the interior of the Citadel. It offers a self-guided tour through the outer wall, gates, and inner courtyard.

Return to the Old Town and take a short walking tour to admire the colorful architecture. A walk along the main square will take you to one of the town’s treasures, the Evangelical Church.

Next, stop for a traditional Romanian lunch at the fancy Radsor Hotel and enjoy the spectacular view over the medieval Citadel!

For an unforgettable adventure with your children, visiting Dino Park is one of the best day trips from Brasov. You’ll come face-to-face with over 100 lifelike dinosaur replicas and various prehistoric creatures that once roamed this land.

Valea Cetatii Cave, located 1.5 kilometers from Rasnov, is an excellent addition to your day trip. You will be amazed by the beautiful limestone formations and white arches inside. The half-hour tourist route is clear and easy to access.

How to Visit Rasnov

The easiest way to visit all the places mentioned above is to rent a car and embarking on a road trip. This option will allow you to set your own pace, stop whenever you want and stay as long as you’d like at each location. You can find parking options near the Radsor Hotel or in the underground parking at the town square.

The other option is to join a captivating guided tour through Transylvania featuring Rasnov Fortress, Peles Castle, and Bran Castle. Enjoy a scenic drive through rural areas that provide stunning views of the Carpathian Mountains. 2. Visit Dracula’s Castle in Transylvania

Distance: 30 kilometers, 30 minutes one way

Bran Castle (Castelul Bran), also known as Dracula’s Castle, is one of Romania’s most famous medieval attractions. It is located just a 30-minute drive from Brașov. To avoid the crowds, I recommend visiting Bran Castle early in the morning.

The area around the Castle is a tourist hub, with many stalls, each offering crafts, local delicacies, and souvenirs. Among the attractions, watch for a particularly intriguing Haunted House—an experience that I challenge you to try!

Bran Castle was originally constructed for defense purposes. After undergoing extensive renovations in the 1920s, it transformed into the beloved residence of Queen Marie. Visitors to the castle are greeted by rooms restored to reflect Queen Marie’s era. Each space is filled with furniture and artwork, offering a captivating glimpse into her life and the luxury she enjoyed. The atmosphere is infused with history, making it a fascinating journey into the past.

Why the name of Dracula, then? The enigmatic character of Count Dracula was brought to life by Bram Stoker in his haunting novel published in 1897. Although Stoker never set foot in Romania, many believe Bran Castle embodies the spirit of the castle described in his story: a picturesque fortress from Transylvania perched on a cliff that overlooks a winding river gorge below.

The only association you will find with Dracula is the Strigoi mentioned in one of the rooms. This mythical creature was said to belong to those who had died under unusual circumstances, and its presence struck terror into the hearts of the superstitious.

A Strigoi comes alive at night in search of the living to drain their blood and restore its waning strength. In some rural places, people tend to place garlic in their homes to protect themselves against evil.

How to Visit Bran Castle

The easiest way to visit Bran Castle is to rent a car in Brasov. If you’re short on time, you can even combine a visit to Bran with Rasnov Fortress. Having a car means you can start whenever you want and stay for as long as you want.

3. Tour the Libearty Bear Sanctuary Zarnesti

Distance: 30 kilometers, 45 minutes drive one way

Libearty Bear Sanctuary is the world’s largest sanctuary dedicated to brown bears, providing a safe haven for these animals rescued from the horrors of captivity throughout Romania. 

Spanning a sprawling 70 hectares of lush oak and hazel forest, the sanctuary offers over a hundred bears the freedom to roam, explore, and live in a more natural habitat. Visiting the sanctuary is undoubtedly one of the most popular day trips from Brasov.

In addition to the bears, abandoned or abused animals, like wolves, donkeys, and dogs, all find refuge and care within this sanctuary.

The sanctuary is only open for visitors from Tuesday to Sunday. The guided tours are conducted in Romanian and English. Children under five years are not allowed inside the Sanctuary for safety reasons. 

Keep in mind that this is not a zoo: there will be moments when you spot the bears, while at other times, they may be hidden from view.

During the guided tour, you’ll delve deeper into the story of this sanctuary and learn more about the person who made everything possible. 

You’ll be moved by sad stories about the challenging lives these bears have endured. Some didn’t even know what it was like to climb a tree, enjoy deeper water for a bath or hide from the sun on hot days. 

The entrance fees might seem expensive at first. Trust me, you will soon realize the price contributes to easing the bears’ lives by providing food and medicine. Those bears need donations; making additional contributions and purchasing stuff from the small shop is highly recommended.

How to Visit the Libearty Bear Sanctuary

Renting a car and driving to the Sanctuary is the most comfortable option. Just make sure to arrive earlier so you don’t miss the tour. If you’re visiting with children, you can drive to Dino Park for an ultimate fun activity.

4. Explore Sinaia and Bucegi

Distance: 50 kilometers, 1h20′ drive one way

One of my favorite day trips from Brasov is undoubtedly the charming little town of Sinaia. Nestled in the stunning Bucegi Mountains, this picturesque destination is a place where you can quickly lose track of time and spend the entire day exploring its surroundings.

The crown jewel of Sinaia is Peles Castle, renowned for its fairytale-like architecture and rich history. Unlike many castles throughout Romania, Peles is remarkably well-preserved, showcasing pristine grounds that are meticulously manicured and an interior adorned with exquisite decor. Visitors often consider it one of the most magnificent castles in Europe, and it’s easy to see why.

A stop at the Sinaia Monastery is a must for anyone looking to delve deeper into the town’s cultural heritage.

Additionally, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the lesser-known but equally enchanting Pelisor Castle, located just a short drive away. This beautiful castle, often overshadowed by its more famous counterpart, is a hidden gem with a unique charm and historical significance.

As you return to Brașov, consider a stop in Busteni to ride the cable car that takes you high into the stunning Bucegi Mountains. This scenic journey offers breathtaking views as you ascend to the mountain’s summit at approximately 2,216 meters above sea level.

Once you reach the top, you’ll encounter the iconic Sphinx, resembling the Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt. This colossal structure comprises numerous large stone blocks, each intricately shaped by the wind and weather.

The breathtaking views from the top offer a panoramic perspective of the picturesque landscape below, making it a perfect spot for photography and enjoying nature’s beauty. 

A day in Sinaia and Busteni promises a beautiful blend of history, culture, and stunning scenery, ensuring an unforgettable experience.

The most convenient way to explore the main attractions in Sinaia and Busteni is by renting a car, allowing you to discover everything at your own pace.

5. Discover Rupea Fortress

Distance: 65 kilometers, one one-hour drive one way

Perched atop a 120-meter-high basalt plateau, Rupea Fortress stands as one of the oldest archaeological sites in the country. During the 14th Century, the fortress underwent significant reconstruction and expansion under the Transylvanian Saxons. Historians estimate that a vibrant community of at least 400 residents once thrived within the fortress’s fortified walls. 

Time has not been gentle to this place; however, in 2010, the exterior walls, towers, and a few original houses were carefully restored to highlight their historical grandeur.

As you approach the fortress, the first thing to notice is the stone walls rising steeply against the sky. 

As you explore the site, you’ll find informative signs placed throughout the grounds, offering insights into the history and stories.

Once at the top, you will be amazed by the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and the quaint town nestled below.

How to Visit Rupea Fortress

Embarking on a road trip to dig lesser-known sights is one of the best day trips from Brasov. The fortress is located between Brasov and Sighisoara and is easy to spot from the road. You will find plenty of parking options around it. It never gets crowded, so you’ll most likely have the place to yourself. The best would be to pair it with a trip to Sighisoara.

6. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Sighisoara 

Distance: 120 kilometers, 2 hours drive one way

Nestled in the heart of Transylvania, Sighisoara boasts a rich history that dates back to the 12th century. Renowned for its well-preserved medieval architecture, Sighisoara was established by skilled artisans, leading to a flourishing community that became home to 15 different guilds. Each guild was specialized in various crafts, contributing to the city’s economic and cultural life during the Middle Ages.

Today, Sighisoara’s old town is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it an important destination for anyone looking for the best day trips from Brasov. 

Start your visit with a coffee or tea and an excellent homemade cake at Casa Cositorarului. The location is charming, quiet, and colorful. The refurbished old furniture gives a comfortable feeling, so don’t forget to snap a pic inside, too.

Next, it’s time to explore the charming cobblestone streets of the medieval Fortress. The historic center is compact, allowing you to navigate and marvel at the colorful houses easily.

Sighisoara is the birthplace of Vlad Dracula, so you will bump into Vlad Tepes’ bust, which is nowadays associated with Dracula and Transylvania. You can access different towers and learn about guilds and artisans working here.

Another spot to catch your attention is the iconic Clock Tower, which stands as a sentinel over the town.

If you’re searching for souvenirs, seek crafted ceramics, vibrant textiles, or intricate woodwork.

Climb the 176 covered stairs of Scholar’s Stairway (Scara Scolarilor) that connect the old town square with the Church on the Hill and the former German cemetery.

After exploring the beautiful Citadel of Sighisoara, end your day trip at Fortress Square (Piata Cetatii) and enjoy a delicious traditional lunch at one of the many restaurants.

How to Visit Sighisoara

I can highly recommend getting there by car. You can find parking options just outside the Old Town. Once there, you won’t have to worry about the car since everything is easy to explore on foot.

7. Drive the Famous Transfagarasan Road, One of the Best Day Trips from Brasov 

Distance from Brasov: 134 km to Balea Lake and 2 hours drive/one-way

Whether you’re a nature lover, a photography enthusiast, or simply looking for a day trip, the Transfagarasan Road drive promises to be an unforgettable experience full of breathtaking scenery.

Spanning an impressive 150 kilometers, the road begins in the charming village of Cartisoara in the north and ends in Bascov in the south. It meanders through picturesque landscapes, with dramatic valleys, and lush forests visible from various vantage points along the route.

If you’re planning a day trip from Brasov, one of the highlights of this adventure is a 30-kilometer drive along the Transfagarasan road from Cartisoara to Balea Lake.

In the beginning, the road has a few corners until the scenery changes entirely, and you’ll soon be blown away by the beauty of the mountains in front of you.

A set of sharp hairpins will take you up to Balea Lake, perched at 2,042 meters. Take a moment to marvel at the stunning backdrop of rugged terrain and serene water. While here, you can discover the Balea Waterfall and indulge in traditional cuisines at one of the huts.

If your time allows you and you want to go on a short hike in the area, head to Capra Saddle (Saua Caprei). The 30-minute hike from Balea Lake will bring you to a beautiful plateau. Here and you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the lake and the valley.

On the high plateau, you will discover another beautiful lake, Capra Lake. This place is pretty and silent, different from the Balea Lake area.

Once you’re done with the views, return to your car. The trip back can be just as rewarding, allowing you to soak in the magnificent views from a different perspective. 

How to Visit the Transfagarasan Road

For obvious reasons, getting to Transfagarasan Road is easier with a car. This spectacular section is closed from October to June due to extreme weather conditions, so keep this in mind. Check and double-check the weather forecast if you want to enjoy the day to the fullest.

Make sure to plan a full-day trip, as you will stop many times and drive at a leisurely pace. Drive it early in the morning to avoid the slow traffic and park only in designated areas.

Depending on the season and time of day, you will find parking options near Balea Chalet or along the road.

8. Hike to the Top of Romania: Moldoveanu Peak 

Distance from Brasov: 134km to BALEA LAKE, 2 hours drive, and 15km hike to Moldoveanu Peak/one-way

One of the most rewarding yet challenging day trips from Brașov is a hike to Moldoveanu Peak, which stands at an impressive elevation of 2,544 meters. Often referred to as the “Roof of Romania,” this majestic mountain offers breathtaking panoramic views that make the effort truly worthwhile. 

For experienced hikers with a good fitness level, it’s possible to drive from Brașov to Moldoveanu Peak and complete the hike within the same day. However, be prepared for a physically demanding adventure, as this will be a very long and exhausting day. 

If you’re considering this trek, the ideal window for hiking is between June and September. During these months, the days are generally longer, and the warmer weather makes for a more pleasant hiking experience. However, keeping a close eye on the weather conditions is crucial. Always check the weather forecast, particularly for humidity levels, as high humidity can increase the likelihood of rain during your trek.

The hiking trail to Moldoveanu is quite challenging and should not be underestimated. Be sure to start your adventure early in the morning to maximize daylight hours, as the trek can take significantly longer than anticipated. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and appropriate gear to ensure you are well-prepared for the demanding conditions ahead. 

Remember to take breaks, enjoy the stunning beauty surrounding you, and above all, prioritize your safety as you take on this remarkable journey to the top of Romania.

9. Explore the Moon Landscape of Romania – The Muddy Volcanoes (Vulcanii Noroiosi) 

Distance: 153 kilometers, 2h30′ drive one-way

Are you interested in witnessing a rare geological phenomenon up close? Then active muddy volcanoes might be one of the best day trips from Brasov! These geological formations are the result of intense geothermal activity originating from deep within the Earth. As this geothermal heat rises, it forces methane and sulfur gases to the surface. Here they mix with water and sediments, giving rise to the viscous, muddy eruptions that characterize these sites.

These muddy volcanoes are the only ones in Eastern Europe, making them a truly extraordinary destination for those seeking unique day trips from Brașov. 

The Paclele Mari and Paclele Mici volcanoes have been recognized as natural monuments since 1924. During the visit, you can marvel at the sight of bubbling mud and gurgling vents and the unusual landscape that the activity has sculpted over time. 

The surrounding area is a geological marvel and boasts scenic beauty, making it an ideal spot for photography and nature lovers. 

Start with the ones from Paclele Mari, leave the rented car at the free parking lot and walk to the entrance. Only a few steps away, you will discover many muddy hills, mini calderas, and bubbling pools. Since these small vulcanos are dynamic and active, you can spend more than an hour observing every movement.

Next, drive forward north and reach Paclele Mici. At Paclele Mici, leave the car at the parking area and walk uphill for 500 meters until you reach the entrance. Once there, you will find yourself on a vast plateau, with one giant crater and many holes made by rainwater draining on top. 

NOTE. It can be slippery, so walk carefully. If you only wish to visit one of the two places, I highly recommend Paclele Mici.
