Take the train to Obertraun Dachsteinhöhlen Bahnhof, located 9 km from the ski resort. From there, you can either catch bus line 542, or take a taxi straight to the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car.
By Bus
Coming from Bad Ischl, Hallstatt, or Gosau? Hop on OÖVV bus lines 542 or 543, which take you directly to the Obertraun Dachsteinseilbahn stop—right in front of the cable car entrance.

Start at the Valley Station (Obertraun)
Your journey begins at the valley station of the Dachstein-Krippensteinbahn, located just outside Obertraun.
Section 1: To Schönbergalm
The first cable car takes you up to Schönbergalm, the first stop and mid-station. This section already offers sweeping views of the Dachstein region.
Section 2: To Krippenstein Summit
From Schönbergalm, hop on the second cable car, which brings you all the way up to the Krippenstein peak—the highest skiable point in the area.
Ski Options from the Summit
Take on the famous 9 km valley run, one of the longest in Upper Austria.
Explore various off-piste and freeride routes if you’re seeking adventure.
Ride down to Gjaid Station (2 km below the summit), enjoy the views, then take the Section 3 cable car back up.

For the winter hikers, the Yeti ticket includes a snow-shoe hiking tour on the Dachstein Krippenstein and the cable car ascent and descent.
The Rumpler ticket includes a cable car ascent and descent and a touring set rental.

How Many Kilometers Can You Cover While Skiing at Krippenstein?
If you’re wondering how far you can go in a day while skiing at Krippenstein, the answer depends on your pace, skill level, and how much time you spend exploring both the pistes and freeride terrain.
Krippenstein’s most famous run—the 9 km valley descent—is the longest in Upper Austria and offers incredible views all the way down. While the resort has around 13 km of groomed slopes, it’s the combination of on-piste and off-piste routes that makes skiing here so unique.
During my visit, I managed to complete 12 descents in a single day—without taking a single break. That added up to well over 100 km covered, thanks to efficient lift access and virtually no crowds. The lifts run smoothly, and the wide-open slopes let you ski more, wait less.
If you’re a strong skier or snowboarder, especially if you start early and push your limits, skiing at Krippenstein can easily turn into a full-day adventure. You can cover 30–50 km or more, especially if you mix in some freeride terrain.
Disclaimer: For many years, the valley descent at Krippenstein was widely advertised as 11 kilometers long. I was always a bit skeptical as my tracking devices consistently measured a shorter distance. Recently, the official information has changed, and the run is now listed as 9 kilometers. Regardless of the exact length, it still holds the title of the longest ski run in Upper Austria—and it absolutely feels like it!
Freesports Arena Dachstein Krippenstein
While Dachstein Krippenstein offers only 11 kilometers of downhill runs, it provides many opportunities for off-piste and freeride enthusiasts. With an extensive network of thirty kilometers of off-piste routes ranging from 609 to 2,109 meters in altitude, winter sports enthusiasts are treated to amazing mountain views.
Having the right equipment is essential when venturing into the extensive off-piste area. Key items include an avalanche transceiver and a sturdy helmet. A well-equipped rucksack should contain a snow shovel and a First Aid kit.
Snowshoeing at Freesports Arena Krippenstein
If you’d rather skip the slopes at Dachstein Krippenstein, snowshoeing offers a magical alternative—and it’s one of my top recommendations for exploring this breathtaking alpine region.
Strap on a pair of snowshoes and step into a winter wonderland. At Freesports Arena Krippenstein, you’ll find three well-marked and groomed snowshoe trails that guide you through spectacular high-alpine scenery: World Heritage Spiral Trail, Five Fingers Trail and Dachstein Shark Trail.
Each trail offers a different perspective of the mountains and valleys, and you can easily spend an entire day discovering these peaceful paths.
If it’s your first time snowshoeing at Krippenstein, I highly recommend starting with the Five Fingers trail.
This route leads you to the iconic “Five Fingers” viewing platform, just a 20-minute walk from the top section of the cable car. The dramatic steel platform extends out 400 meters above the valley floor, offering unforgettable panoramic views of the Dachstein mountains and the Salzkammergut region.
No matter which trail you choose, snowshoeing at Krippenstein gives you front-row access to some of Austria’s most stunning winter landscapes—without the crowds or the rush.

One such spot is the Mountain Restaurant Dachstein Krippenstein, conveniently located near the top section of the cable car. This restaurant provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Be sure to try the carrot ginger soup or savor the salmon trout.
One of my favorite places when skiing at Krippenstein is the Lodge am Krippenstein, situated just a short 3-minute walk from the cable car’s top station. You need to try the succulent roast pork served with bread dumplings and coleslaw or their homemade apple strudel. Additionally, this lodge offers comfortable accommodation, making it an ideal spot for those looking to extend their stay in the Alps.
For a more rustic experience, head to Gjaid Alm, which is only a scenic 10-minute walk from the Gjaid Cable Car. This charming hut serves traditional dishes and offers cozy accommodations.
Dachsteinbuffet is conveniently located in the valley right at the cable car’s base. This spot is perfect for grabbing snacks and drinks, making it an ideal place to refuel before heading back up the mountain or winding down after an exhilarating day of skiing.

That said, the resort does face one major drawback: low snowfall levels in the valley can make access to the summit difficult, and skiing may become limited during warmer winters. As climate patterns shift, I do worry about the long-term future of this alpine paradise.
Still, for now, Dachstein Krippenstein remains one of Austria’s most unique winter gems—and one I hope many more people get to experience, whether on skis, snowshoes, or from the sky.
