Day 1. Arrival Day. Queen Alia International Airport – Dead Sea Resorts
Distance: 60 kilometers, 1 hour drive
Getting a SIM card
When you arrive at Queen Alia International Airport, you can buy a data SIM card from the kiosks located at the arrival hall. There are a few network operators to choose from, but I recommend the Orange one.
If you’re in a hurry, you might want to consider using E-SIMs, as they are the most convenient option. You don’t need to install them physically, and there are no long-term commitments. Picking up the rental car
After completing the necessary entry formalities, you’ll be grateful to pick up your rental car and embark on a journey towards your accommodation at the Dead Sea. This scenic drive, just an hour from the airport, is the perfect start to your Jordan road trip itinerary.
With a rental car, you’ll be free to explore at your own pace, making your travel experience truly yours. Almost all destinations are easy to access with a car, and having your own vehicle is also the smoothest way to travel and discover new places on this 10-day Jordan itinerary.

Dead Sea Resort
Did you know that the Dead Sea, often mistaken for a sea, is actually a lake? It’s known by various names, such as the Salt Sea, Sea of Lot, or Sea of Death. But what’s truly fascinating is that it’s the deepest hypersaline lake in the world! This natural wonder, the lowest point on Earth, is renowned for its therapeutic properties, particularly respiratory and skin issues.
Unfortunately, the Dead Sea is shrinking about a meter yearly, so plan a visit as soon as possible!
The Dead Sea hotels in Jordan are located on the northern side, and it’s the best part of having the finest floating experience. So, choose a hotel with direct access to the Dead Sea and enjoy its facilities.
Floating the Dead Sea has been on my bucket list for a while now. However, I never expected it to be so much fun: not standing correctly on my feet—a highlight of our 10-day Jordan itinerary.
Some essential safety tips for your visit to the Dead Sea:
Rule number one: keep your eyes and mouth away from the water. If water does get into your eye, there’s no need to panic. Wash it out as soon as possible.
Swimming in the Dead Sea for more than 20 minutes is not recommended, so keep track of time. Instead, hydrate adequately and alternate your floating experience with pool relaxation. And, once again, rinse properly every time you get out of the water!
For the rest of the afternoon, try to relax at the resort pool since you’ll have an active day the next day.
Day 2. Dead Sea – Wadi Mujib – Wadi Musa
Distance: 200 kilometers, 3 hours drive
Wadi Mujib
Day two is about adventure, so you must wake up early.
The Wadi Mujib, the lowest nature reserve in the world, is a haven for adventure enthusiasts. Known as the Grand Canyon of Jordan, it offers a variety of thrilling activities.
One of the highlights is the Siq trail, a three-hour self-guided hike that takes you through towering sandstone cliffs against the river’s current. It’s a challenging yet rewarding experience that’s not to be missed.
The route to Wadi Mujib is straightforward. Follow route 65 or the Dead Sea highway until you reach Mujib Adventure Center (you can find the exact spot on the map section).
Leave all your belongings at the visitor center and prepare for one of the highlights of this 10-day Jordan itinerary.
It’s important to note that the Siq trail in Wadi Mujib is open for adventure from April 1 to October 31. During this time, the water level is manageable, and the trail is accessible.
The trail is marked as “self-guided” and graded as “easy to medium.” However, be prepared for some challenging sections that require a certain fitness level (for some waterfalls, you need to climb bare hands or with the help of ropes).
When preparing for the Siq trail, it’s important to dress appropriately. Wearing a swimsuit is not advisable; instead, opt for shorts, a T-shirt, hand gloves, and anti-slippery shoes. For your personal items, bringing a dry bag might be a good idea. You can even rent one from the visitor center.
Dead Sea Viewpoints
Although the hotels are located on the northern side of the Dead Sea, and it’s an excellent place to have the best floating experience, the most beautiful area to admire the Dead Sea is around Wadi Al Mujib or Mujib Bridge.
Here, you’ll find many fantastic salt formations. And what blew my mind: I’d never expected to find such clear water.
You can also get in the water here (if not signposted differently), but I wouldn’t recommend that. There are no showers to rinse, and staying with that salt on your body until later in the day is not an option. It will make you scratch like crazy!
So, stop here only for the views!
King’s Highway
After swimming in the canyon and grabbing photos of the Dead Sea, it’s time to take the scenic drive from Wadi Mujib to Wadi Musa.
The famous King’s Highway runs through fields and villages, offering a glimpse of the real Jordan. You can stop along the way and admire the beauty of this place, making the journey as memorable as the destination.
Day 3. The UNESCO World Heritage Site Petra – the Treasury
Petra is enormous, and there is so much to see! But if you need to cover this 10-day in Jordan itinerary, two days are enough to discover the ancient city of Petra.
Today is the big day, so make sure to wake up early, grab the packed breakfast from your accommodation and be at the main entrance at opening times. Brace yourself for a day of adventure and exploration, as there is so much to see and do, and be prepared for a full day of walking!
The Treasury
Your first day at Petra starts with a 2-kilometer walk on a smooth path from the Visitors Center. The first part is wide and open, with sightseeing on both sides. Soon, you’ll notice the Siq, a narrow and beautiful 1.2-kilometer-long natural gorge! Take time to observe the colors, listen to the silence, and feel the energy of the place.
Prepare to be captivated by a sight unlike any other at the end of the Siq: the Treasury! This 40-meter-tall symmetrical building, intricately carved into the sandstone with detailed ornaments, is Petra’s crown jewel and will leave you in awe.
Unfortunately, you can’t go inside, but you’ll have enough time to photograph this magnificent place. Don’t forget to head to the rock on the right-hand side of the Treasury for the best Instagram photos.
Petra Viewpoints
If you have already been impressed by the Treasury, it’s time to head to one of the viewpoints for a better view. There are two viewpoints of the Treasury: one is accessible with a guide only for a fee, and the other is free to access but requires more time.
On the left-hand side facing the Treasury, the first viewpoint is accessible only with a local guide for a cost. It is the shorter but more challenging and steeper way, offering a unique perspective of this ancient wonder.
Try to avoid getting there on your own because the locals can be very territorial and aggressive. There are daily conflicts between tourists and so-called guides, and the police do nothing about it. What intrigues me the most is that this viewpoint is off-limits, but the Jordan Tourism Board always shares photos from this prohibited place.
To reach the second viewpoint of the Treasury, a hidden gem I highly recommend, you’ll need to visit the Royal Tombs first. While more accessible than the first, this viewpoint offers a unique perspective and is well worth the extra time. If you’re a fan of breathtaking views and have the luxury of time, this is the one to see!
Continue following the path, passing the Royal Tombs and climbing the stairs. You’ll be on the Al Khubta Trail now. Depending on your fitness level, the trek takes around 30 minutes.
Once you’ve made it to the top, you can witness the Treasury from the rocks in total silence! No one will be around to harass you or offer his services.
You will spot a tent with the best view of the Treasury. Step inside the small Bedouin tent and enjoy the views. It’s totally worth it! Pay the owner some respect by buying something from his shop and enjoying the fantastic views! We opted for a delicious tea and spent more than an hour here!
After strolling around the area, return to your accommodation for relaxation and a nice meal.
Day 4. The UNESCO World Heritage Site Petra – the Monastery
On day 4, you will visit the Monastery, the further attraction point and one of the most iconic monuments in Petra. The breathtaking and equally impressive structure is a testament to the grandeur of Petra. Its main purpose is still unknown, but it’s speculated to have been a royal tomb at first and, later, a church in the Byzantine period.
The hike may be challenging, but the reward is a serene and awe-inspiring view that is a must-see for all visitors on a 10-day in Jordan itinerary.
You’ll have to pass the Treasury until you reach the Royal Tombs. From there, you’ll have a 2-3 hour return walk (4.5km) through the lost city, and some climbing is involved (800 steps). The views along the way are impressive, and the Monastery is stunning, so make sure not to skip it!
There is a lovely terrace nearby where you can sit, savor a refreshment in total silence and admire the best view of the site!
Petra by Night
Petra by Night is an exclusive event not covered by the Jordan Pass or any other day ticket. It takes place only on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. and requires a separate ticket. If you’re traveling during those days, make sure to include it on your Jordan road trip itinerary.
This unique experience of Petra has varying interpretations. Some find it enchanting, while others perceive it as commercial due to the vocal presence of locals.
Prepare for a mysterious journey as you walk one mile from the entrance in the dark. The anticipation builds as you approach the Treasury, where a site presentation awaits, accompanied by the melodic tunes of local instruments.
Having experienced the awe-inspiring beauty of the Treasury during the day, we were intrigued to witness Petra at night. We found a comfortable spot, eagerly anticipating when the lights would illuminate this architectural marvel, and we were not disappointed!
Day 5. Wadi Musa – Little Petra – Aqaba
Distance: 150 kilometers, 2 hours 30 minutes drive
When it comes to Jordan, most travelers have the ancient city of Petra on their radar. But did you know there’s a smaller, equally breathtaking site called Little Petra? This hidden treasure offers a unique experience, mainly because it attracts fewer tourists. Imagine having this stunning site almost to yourself, a privilege reserved for the few who venture here!
Day 5 on your 10-day in Jordan itinerary begins slowly. You might be tired, considering you’ve covered every single part of Petra. Enjoy a delicious breakfast, and after that, embark on a 15-minute drive from the town of Wadi Musa to reach Little Petra. One to two hours are sufficient to roam freely and admire the intricately carved structures.
Little Petra History
Built by the Nabataeans around the 1st century A.D., Little Petra was a smaller version of Petra and a crucial outpost on the Silk Road, providing shelter and services to weary merchants. The buildings, a marvel of human ingenuity, were intricately carved into the walls of sandstone canyons.
Despite its size, Little Petra’s role was unique, and it was a thriving community for centuries. Unfortunately, with the decline of the Nabataeans, Petra and Little Petra were abandoned around the 8th century A.D.
Excavated in the 1950s, Little Petra remains one of the oldest villages in the Middle East, a testament to human civilization’s early beginnings. Now, Petra and Little Petra are considered one of the modern seven wonders of the world.
Little Petra Opening Times
Little Petra is FREE to visit, so don’t fall into the trap of paying someone who asks you to. Instead, park the car in the designated area, take your belongings, and enter the site.
Little Petra is open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the summer and from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the winter.
Little Petra Visit, a hidden gem on your 10-day Jordan itinerary
Before you even reach the Siq, your eyes will be drawn to the magnificent Tomb Facade 845, a masterpiece crafted sometime in the first century A.D. Though the tomb’s grandeur was never fully realized, it still stands as a testament to the skill and artistry of its creators and offers breathtaking photo opportunities.
Siq al Barid, the path leading to the Treasury, has its own distinct charm. Unlike Petra’s siq, it is narrower and shorter, measuring a mere 400 meters.
Along the path, you will bump into the painted house. This treasure, dating back 2,000 years, is an exhibition of impressive paintings that came to life after a massive restoration project in 2010.
The Siq opens to a beautiful wide square with gorgeous views over the small Treasury. While the Treasury is inaccessible, you can access the caves on the ground floor.
As the canyon narrows down, the path becomes more challenging, navigating on steep rocks.
Once you reach the top, you will discover an elegant carpeted stall with a lovely terrace offering beautiful mountain views.
After visiting this hidden gem, embark on a two-hour drive to reach Aqaba, another highlight of this 10-day in Jordan itinerary.
Day 6. The coastal city of Aqaba
The only coastal city in the country, Aqaba, is the place to be if snorkeling or scuba diving is high on your list. Immerse yourself in the captivating beauty of Aqaba’s underwater world, with its constant crystal-clear visibility and astonishing display of diverse marine life.
The warm waters of the Gulf of Aqaba, available year-round, make this place the perfect spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. Anyone should consider this beauty when visiting this wonderful country.
Snorkeling Boat Tour
Discover vibrant coral gardens with a variety of colorful fish on a snorkeling trip from Aqaba. Explore two snorkeling sights and enjoy a tasty buffet lunch onboard with snacks and fruit.
On a funny note, we were supposed to spend a gorgeous day by the sea, on a sailboat—just tanning, swimming and snorkeling, relaxing and doing nothing.
But that was until my husband and his PEDI instructor encouraged me to face my fears and try scuba diving. This was a challenge for me, as the underwater world often makes me anxious or, even worse, scares me. However, I am so grateful they pushed me into trying this, as I had the most beautiful experience! And the most amazing PEDI instructor! It proved the power of pushing past our comfort zones and trying new things. It was definitely one of the highlights of our 10-day Jordan road trip itinerary.

Aqaba by night
After seeing more than enough on your boat adventure, get lost on the streets, buy souvenirs, and try local food and the most delicious local desserts! Aqaba won’t disappoint, for sure!
Day 7. Aqaba – Wadi Rum
Distance: 60 kilometers, 1 hour dive
Morning in Aqaba
Fortunately, on day 7, you won’t have to wake up early. Enjoy your breakfast, spend some time at the pool or the public beach. Essentially, do whatever pleases you. If it gets too hot, refresh yourself with a specialty iced coffee at one of the many cafes in town. V60 Specialty Coffee Roasters is my recommendation for the best coffee in town.
By noon, it’s time to hit the road again and take the scenic route to Wadi Rum Village.

Another fantastic place on your 10-day Jordan road trip itinerary is the Wadi Rum desert, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once you reach Wadi Rum, you should opt for a Jeep tour.
Most people living here are of Bedouin origin and rely on tourism. The Bedouins are a nomadic Arab ethnic group known for hospitality and rich cultural heritage. Our driver, a Bedouin guide, did everything in his power to ensure we had the best time and amazed us with the beauty of this place.
The deeper we drove into the desert, the more alien it felt! We drove more than 100km on a four-hour guided tour and saw many beautiful places, each with its own story.
There is something magical about this place! Maybe the red sand, the silence, the vast sand dunes, the pureness, the Martian landscape.
On the north ridge of Wadi Rum stands the 35-meter-high Burdah Rock Bridge. It is considered one of the highest natural arches in the world and one of the most spectacular sites in Wadi Rum.
Another unique arch and one of the most photographed landmarks in the area is Um Fruth Rock, a 15-meter-high bridge that you shouldn’t miss.
Little Bridge is the perfect option for those who want a taste of adventure without climbing too high.
At the end of the tour, the driver will find a perfect spot to witness the incredible sunset in the vast desert.
Spending the night in a Martian Dome
After a day of adventure, it’s time to immerse yourself in the local culture. Wadi Rum is the perfect place to experience the culinary treasure of Bedouin culture: the Zarb. This delicious dish is a blend of marinated meat cooked underground in a metal oven.
Dinner in the Bedouin camp is a lively affair, often accompanied by live music and traditional dancing. It’s a unique opportunity to connect with the local culture and feel enriched by the experience.
For a truly indulgent experience, spend the night in a luxurious Martian tent. Equipped with all the modern amenities you could desire, including water and power, air conditioning, and a fridge, it’s a far cry from traditional camping.
Gazing at the starry sky and basking in the serene silence, you’ll feel a sense of tranquility and relaxation before retiring for the night.
Day 8. Wadi Rum – Dana Biosphere Reserve
Distance: 170 kilometers, 2hours 30minutes drive
The Dana Biosphere Reserve is the largest nature reserve in Jordan, covering around 320 square kilometers.
Nestled within the breathtaking landscape of rural Jordan, the Dana Biosphere Reserve offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the authentic charm of village life.
Situated on the rim of a majestic canyon, the tranquil Dana village provides an ideal setting for a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Few accommodations are scattered around the area, so you can easily find one that suits your budget.
After the long drive, take some time to stroll through the village. Due to modernization, many residents have abandoned the village and settled elsewhere, so some of the houses are abandoned by now. The walls and roofs have collapsed, and remnants of the past can still be found. While strolling through the ruins of the abandoned village, you’ll feel like you’ve traveled back in time.
After sifting through these places, you can go on a hike to discover the surroundings. Dana Biosphere is a hiking paradise with many different trails and treks! The most popular hike is the Wadi Dana Trail, a 16-kilometer ( 4-5 hours ) one-way route from Dana Village.
From the surrounding roads at the top of the hill, there are several vantage points that offer breathtaking panoramic views of Dana Village. After exploring the area, find a spot and witness a memorable sunset!
Dana Village is one of the charming traditional villages, and I can highly recommend incorporating it into your Jordan road trip itinerary, even if you’re not into hikes. You will love the scenery and the views.
Day 9. Dana Biosphere Reserve – Madaba
Distance: 180 kilometers, 2hours 30minutes drive
Madaba, the city of Mosaics, is known for its mosaics, mosques, churches, and archeological complexes. There is no other site in Jordan that is filled with more historical monuments than Madaba. It is believed that underneath almost every house lies a Byzantine mosaic, which is pretty fascinating, right?
Find accommodation in the city’s heart and walk around the town to discover its hidden gems. The city center is very compact, and you can easily reach various places.
As you know by now, Jordan is a Muslim country, but Madaba is an exception because there is quite a large population of Christians.
Start with a visit to St. George Orthodox Church, which is a must on any Jordan road trip itinerary. It houses a jewel of early Christianity: the famous 6th-century Mosaic Map, the world’s oldest glance into the cartography of the Middle East from biblical times.
Continue to one of the two archeological parks in Madaba, which consists of ruins from the 6th century.
Walk around the area, do some souvenir shopping, engage in conversations with the welcoming locals, and after that, refresh yourself with a cold drink. Kawoon Coffee is the cutest coffee house in town, and I highly recommend visiting.
If you’re up for a drive, Mount Nebo, where Moses saw the Promise Land, is only a 15-minute drive from Madaba. You will find a serpentine cross sculpture and a modern church on the top of the hill.
After much sightseeing, return to your accommodation and savor a delicious dinner on your last day in Jordan. Being a Christian city, you will find a selection of Jordanian craft beers and wines, so make sure to try some.
Day 10. Departure day
Madaba lies only a 30-minute drive from Queen Alia International Airport and less than an hour’s drive from the capital, Amman. Depending on your flight hours, you can spend the morning in Madaba or drive to Amman and spend some time there.
The capital of Jordan, Amman, is a modern city with many ancient ruins to visit. It’s not really the kind of place to stay longer than a couple of nights, but seeing the Amman Citadel and Jerash ruins should also be included in your Jordan road trip itinerary if time allows.
You will be full of memories and euphoria by now, and you will be thrilled that you decided to embark on this journey, which you have successfully achieved!
But the world is huge and ready for you to find another amazing destination, a new place that will fill you with excitement and curiosity.
