Short Info About our Oman Road Trip Itinerary
Our visit to Oman during the winter holiday season in Europe was a journey of freedom. We were not sure what to expect in terms of crowds and tourists, but we soon found ourselves on empty roads, navigating loose traffic and meeting incredibly friendly people. It was a stark contrast to Europe and a refreshing change of scenery.
Our two-week North Oman road trip itinerary included exploring the major cities, spending one night in the desert, hiking the second-largest canyon in the world, swimming in the canyons, and exploring abandoned villages.
The highlight of the trip was the culinary journey through India, Pakistan, and Oman. It was truly a treat!
Although a 4WD vehicle isn’t essential for most of northern Oman, we decided to take a different approach. Instead of staying in hot and hectic Nizwa, we headed up into the cooler climate of the Hajar Mountains to spend a few days in Jebel Akhdar — and I highly recommend doing the same.
Do note that a 4WD is required to access Jebel Akhdar. There’s a checkpoint at the base of the mountain where regular cars aren’t allowed. But don’t worry — later in this guide, I’ll share alternative options if you’re not driving a 4WD.
We booked our 4WD well in advance and scored an amazing deal — so good, in fact, that my husband thought it might be a scam! But no tricks, no hidden charges! Just a nearly new Hyundai Tucson, which turned out to be the perfect companion for our Oman road trip adventure.
Is 2 Weeks Enough for an Oman Road Trip?
Yes, 2 weeks is the perfect amount of time for an Oman road trip. It gives you enough time to explore the country’s highlights without rushing, from the dramatic landscapes of the Hajar Mountains and the golden dunes of Wahiba Sands to ancient forts, traditional villages, and beautiful coastal scenery.
With 14 days in Oman, you can comfortably combine famous places like Muscat, Nizwa, Jebel Akhdar, Jebel Shams, Wadi Shab, and the Wahiba Desert while still leaving room for spontaneous stops along the way. This itinerary is designed as a self-drive adventure, allowing you to experience Oman at a slower pace and discover some of the country’s hidden gems.
While you could see many highlights in less time, a 2-week Oman itinerary allows you to enjoy the journey, not just tick places off a list. You’ll have time for scenic drives, short hikes, local experiences, and unforgettable moments along the road.

2 Week Oman Road Trip Itinerary
Day 1. Arrival in Muscat – Pick Up Your Car & Get Connected
Welcome to Oman!
After landing in Muscat, you’ll immediately feel the calm, friendly atmosphere that makes this country so special. The capital city is a peaceful introduction to the Middle East — framed by rugged mountains, whitewashed buildings, and the blue of the Gulf of Oman.
But before diving into the scenery, it’s time to get a few essentials sorted.
Getting a SIM Card
When you arrive at Muscat’s Seeb International Airport, you can buy a data SIM card from the two kiosks located in the arrival hall. There are two network operators to choose from: Omantel and Ooredoo. Both options have similar costs and service quality.

Where to Stay in Muscat
If you’re wondering where to stay in Muscat, there are three main areas to consider. No matter where you choose to stay, you’ll likely need to drive to get around.
Mutrah, also known as Old Muscat, is one of the most beautiful areas in the city and is perfect for sightseeing.
Qurum is another excellent area to stay in Muscat if you want to combine sightseeing with beach life.
Another zone worth considering is the one near the Muscat International Airport. In recent years, this area has become modernized, featuring waterfront restaurants, a shopping mall, and a marina.
Depending on your arrival time in Muscat, you can relax by the pool if your hotel has one or take a long walk on one of the many promenades scattered throughout the city. Or simply call it a day and prepare for an epic Oman road trip adventure.

Day 2. Muscat
Ease into your adventure with a full day of sightseeing in Oman’s elegant capital, Muscat. Don’t worry about waking up at sunrise — today is all about soaking in the city’s culture, architecture, and coastal charm at a relaxed pace. While Muscat is spread out, the well-maintained roads and modern highway system make it easy to get around
Royal Opera House
Start your day at the Royal Opera House, a stunning fusion of Omani tradition and modern elegance. Opened in 2011, it quickly became one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
Admire the grand white marble exteriors, beautifully carved wooden ceilings, and the refined details that reflect Oman’s rich heritage.
For a deeper look inside, join a guided tour (approx. 20 minutes, small fee) to explore the main auditorium and backstage areas.
Qurum Beach
After exploring the Royal Opera House, head over to Qurum Beach, one of Muscat’s most beloved coastal spots. Stretching for nearly 5 kilometers, this long, sandy beach is perfect for a relaxing walk along the shore — especially if you’re still recovering from your flight.
If you skipped breakfast or need a caffeine boost, there are several cafes nearby where you can enjoy a coffee or light bite while taking in views of the Gulf of Oman.
TIP: Grab a seat at one of the beachfront cafes like Costa Coffee or Starbucks (both with sea views) — or check out local options tucked just off the promenade.
Old Muscat
Now it’s time to head east to discover the historical Old Muscat. During your visit, you can start by visiting the Al Alam Palace, one of the six royal residences of Sultan Qaboos. While it’s not open to the public, you can walk around the area and take pictures of the beautiful palace.
Al Jalali Fort, a symbol of Oman’s rich history, is perched atop a rocky outcrop, offering a commanding view of Muscat Bay. You can enjoy a leisurely stroll in the area, and for the best view, head to the viewing spot near Mirani Fort.
Al Mirani Fort is an impressive 16th-century fort located at the entrance to the port of Muscat alongside Al-Jalali Fort. It is open to visitors and offers guided tours for those interested in its in-depth history.
Mutrah
If you are interested in culture and history, you should include a visit to the Bait Al Zubair Museum in your Oman road trip itinerary. The exhibits provide a comprehensive look at Oman’s heritage, showcasing traditional attire, ancient artifacts, handicrafts, furniture, stamps, and coins.
After a full day of sightseeing, treat yourself to a leisurely walk along the Mutrah Corniche. The 3-kilometer promenade becomes a delightful stroll as the sun’s glare softens. Admire the gardens, fountains, sculptures, theme park, and the giant incense burner as you journey from the Fish Market to the Muttrah Fort.

Day 3. Muscat
You will wake up early on your second day in Muscat, but the itinerary will be pretty loose. Visit the impressive Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and then embark on an afternoon boat trip to the beautiful Ad Daymaniyat Islands. Finish your stay in Muscat with a traditional Omani dinner.
Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
Begin your second day in Muscat with a visit to the breathtaking Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, a true masterpiece of modern Islamic architecture. Completed in 2001, it stands as one of the largest mosques in the world, accommodating up to 20,000 worshippers.
Named after the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said, this mosque is not only Muscat’s most iconic landmark but also an essential stop on any Oman road trip itinerary.
Prepare to be amazed by its sheer scale and exquisite craftsmanship — from the intricate mosaic work to the stunning Swarovski crystal chandelier, which is the world’s second largest. The handwoven carpet inside was once the largest in the world and adds to the mosque’s sense of grandeur and serenity.
When visiting the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, it’s important to dress modestly out of respect for the local culture and religious customs. Women should wear long dresses or skirts, long sleeves, and cover their heads. Men should wear long pants and long sleeves, too.
The mosque is open to non-Muslims from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. daily, except on Fridays, and entrance is free. I recommend arriving early to enjoy the serene atmosphere with fewer people. From 9:30 a.m., the groups arrive, and the place’s energy changes completely.

After your visit to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, you might want to head back to your hotel for a leisurely breakfast and some rest. If you’re ready for a more unique experience, try enjoying your coffee with a stunning sea view at one of Muscat’s charming beachfront cafés.
For a peaceful change of pace, take a scenic drive along the coastline between Azaiba Beach and Seeb Beach. This quiet route offers beautiful ocean views and a chance to unwind away from the city’s buzz.

Our snorkeling experience was unforgettable! The crystal-clear waters exceeded all expectations, and swimming alongside turtles and colorful fish was simply magical.
TIP: Book your tour well in advance to secure your spot — these trips fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons.
I recommend the late afternoon tour for a more relaxed vibe and cooler temperatures, but if you prefer, the morning tour is also a great option to fit your Oman road trip itinerary.

Day 4. Muscat – Bimmah Hole – Wadi Shab – Sur
Distance: 211 kilometers, 2h15′ without stops, no 4WD needed
Today marks the official start of your Oman road trip adventure! Leaving Muscat behind, you’ll head east along the stunning coastal road toward the charming town of Sur.
This drive is packed with breathtaking viewpoints and natural wonders, so take your time and enjoy plenty of stops along the way. Your rental car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace — whether that’s a quick swim, a scenic hike, or just soaking in the views.
Highlights for the day include the famous Bimmah Sinkhole, the enchanting Wadi Shab, and the beautiful coastal town of Sur itself.
Get ready for an unforgettable day full of nature, adventure, and authentic Omani charm!
Bimmah Sinkhole
The first stop of the day is the Bimmah Sinkhole. It is believed to be a meteorite-made hole, and the view from above is stunning. The entrance is free, and there is an ample parking lot.
While many choose to spend time here and swim/jump in the crystal clear water, I recommend stopping here to take photos. There’s no need to lose precious time since the real adventure is only a few kilometers away.
Wadi Shab
After enjoying the Bimmah Sinkhole, hop back in the car and continue toward one of Oman’s most spectacular natural wonders: Wadi Shab.
Once you arrive, park in the designated lot and prepare for a short boat ride across the water (just 1 OMR per person) that will take you to the mouth of the canyon — the starting point for your hike.
From there, follow a mostly flat, well-marked trail leading to a series of stunning natural swimming pools. While many visitors stop at the first pools, I highly recommend continuing on to the last pools for a more serene experience.
The hike takes about an hour and involves some easy climbing and wading through shallow streams, making it accessible for most fitness levels. Plus, the farther you go, the fewer crowds you’ll encounter — allowing you to soak in Wadi Shab’s beauty in peaceful solitude.
From here, you’ll be in the water most of the time, swimming between boulders and navigating through narrow canyon openings. Those feeling adventurous should try to reach the small Wadi Shab Waterfall. It’s an exhilarating experience, not as daunting as it sounds!
Bring a dry bag to keep your belongings dry, a waterproof camera, and water shoes. Wadi Shab is suitable for wearing a bikini, but modest dressing is appreciated.
Sur
After an adrenaline-filled day, continue your journey with a scenic 50-kilometer drive to Sur, one of northern Oman’s most tranquil coastal towns. This charming seaside city offers a peaceful retreat from the bustle of Muscat and a chance to unwind by the sea.
Once you’ve checked into your hotel, if you’re up for more exploring, take a stroll through Sur Souq. Unlike the tourist-focused souqs in Muscat, Sur’s market feels authentically local. Here, you won’t find typical souvenirs or magnets, but rather traditional clothes, vibrant fabrics, and everyday essentials that reflect the local lifestyle.
Wandering through the colorful stalls offers a wonderful glimpse into Sur’s culture and gives you a genuine connection with the community.

Day 5. Sur and Surroundings
Sur – Al Hadd, 45 kilometers, 45 minutes, no 4WD needed
Day 5 is all about slowing down and soaking up the peaceful coastal charm of Sur and its surroundings.
Start your day with a leisurely walk along the Sur Corniche, lined with palm trees and offering sweeping views of the Arabian Sea.
Then, head to the old quarter near Al Ayjah Lighthouse — a quiet area filled with white-washed houses and narrow lanes. You can even climb the lighthouse for panoramic views of the town and sea.
A true highlight is visiting a traditional dhow-building yard, where local craftsmen still build wooden boats by hand. It’s a fascinating glimpse into Omani maritime heritage, and you might even get to try a few tools yourself.
Of course, the region is also known for its turtles. Just a short drive away is the Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve, where you can join a guided beach tour at 9 p.m. or 5 a.m. to witness turtles nesting on the shore. If this is on your bucket list, it’s well worth it — but we personally skipped it, having had a similar experience in Mexico.
Just a 40-minute drive south of Sur lies Al Hadd Beach, a hidden gem known for its pristine sands, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant marine life. During our visit, we spotted large turtle nests and eggshells along the shore, and even glimpsed a turtle swimming peacefully in the sea!
Another fantastic spot for swimming and sunbathing is Turtle Beach. Nestled between towering cliffs, this secluded white-sand beach offers calm waters—perfect for a relaxing afternoon. Including Turtle Beach in our Oman road trip itinerary was one of the best decisions we made.
Day 6. Sur – Wadi Bani Khalid – Bidiyah
Distance: 160 kilometers, 2h30′ drive, no 4WD needed
Day 6 will be one of the most memorable days on your Oman road trip itinerary. Start early to maximize your day, as it will be filled with activities.
Wadi Bani Khalid, the First Stop of The Day
Like other wadis in Oman, Wadi Bani Khalid is a place where you can hike, swim through the canyon, and explore the many small canyons and caves. It is one of the most famous wadis in North Oman, known for its panoramic landscapes, natural pools, and the stunning Muqal Cave. The pools are fed by natural springs, so fresh water is constantly flowing, perfect for swimming.
Wadi Bani Khalid is more accessible than Wadi Shab; therefore, you will encounter many locals. Dressing modestly is advisable to show respect for the local culture and customs. I wore shorts and a long-sleeve shirt and was perfectly fine.
To get to Wadi Bani Khalid, you’ll need to type “Wadi Bani Khalid Parking” into Google Maps. A 5-minute walk from the parking lot leads to an inviting pool next to the restaurant, a tranquil spot to unwind.
Once again, don’t stop here; venture deeper into the canyon. The further you delve, the fewer people you’ll see, allowing for a truly peaceful experience.
From here, swim your way down through the canyon while admiring the towering white cliffs and palm trees.
Wahiba Sands Desert
Now, as you leave behind the lush oasis, prepare to immerse yourself in the vast desert. A night in the desert is a unique adventure that will add a thrilling twist to your Oman road trip itinerary.
Usually, the desert camp where you will be staying will provide a meeting point in Bidiyah, such as a gas station or private parking. It will be around 3:30 pm, so make sure to plan accordingly. Here, you will leave your car and be transferred into the desert.
We chose Desert Wonder Camps, a place that offers authentic Bedouin-style accommodation in tents. The owner greeted us at the meeting point and arranged for other guests to be transferred into 4×4 vehicles. Despite being the only ones driving, we were confident in our sand skills, a fact that became clear to the reluctant local drivers.
Upon reaching the camp, you’ll embark on a 4×4 dune adventure. The local drivers will guide you through the dunes, allowing you to witness the vastness of the desert. For those seeking an adrenaline rush, dune bashing is a must-try, offering a thrilling experience like no other.
As the sun sets, you’ll pause on a dune for a breathtaking view. Be sure to wear something warm, as desert nights can be chilly.
Afterward, you will return to camp for dinner and a performance by the local Bedouins. As you head to your tent, take in the tranquility of the desert, the stars, and the moonlight!

Day 7. Wahiba Sands – Jebel Akhdar

After a peaceful night under the stars in the desert, wake up to a simple breakfast surrounded by golden dunes. If you haven’t already, this is a great time to enjoy a camel ride — a classic desert experience that adds a special touch to your stay in Wahiba Sands.
Once you’re ready to move on, a driver will take you back to the desert camp’s meeting point, where you’ll reunite with your rental car.
Now it’s time to leave the desert behind and climb into the Al Hajar Mountains, as you drive toward the stunning Saiq Plateau in Jebel Akhdar. The contrast between landscapes is striking — from rolling sand dunes to dramatic cliffs and cool mountain air, all in just a few hours of driving.
Staying up on the Sayq Plateau is one of the highlights of your Oman road trip itinerary. The cooler temperatures, jaw-dropping views, and peaceful mountain villages make it a perfect contrast to the desert — and a truly unforgettable destination.
Stop at Birkat al Mouz, One of the Most Famous Villages in Oman
On your way up to Jebel Akhdar, make time to stop at Birkat Al Mouz, one of the most iconic and well-preserved traditional villages in Oman. Nestled at the base of the Al Hajar Mountains, this historic spot offers a glimpse into Oman’s rural past — and is especially beloved by palm tree enthusiasts thanks to its lush groves of date and banana palms.
The village is actually made up of two old settlements, but visiting just one is enough to experience the charm and heritage of the place. As you wander through the mudbrick ruins, you’ll feel transported back in time — the quiet alleys, crumbling walls, and traditional falaj irrigation channels tell stories of a bygone era.
Before continuing your climb toward Jebel Akhdar, don’t miss the chance to grab a refreshing iced coffee at Bait Al Sabah Coffee, a cozy local café with views of the palms. It’s the perfect way to cool off and soak in the atmosphere.

PARKING: type Ancient Old Houses into Google Maps, and you’ll find plenty of parking places along the main street. From here, you’ll be at Bait Al Sabah Cafe in no time, where you’ll find the abandoned village.
TIP. The viewpoint offers a scenic view of the plantations and abandoned villages. Just type Overlook Spot into Google Maps to find it.
Getting to Jebel Akhdar
Jebel Akhdar, perched atop the Al Hajar Mountain range, is a gem of unique experiences. It boasts the world’s finest pomegranates, and the Sayq Plateau, which rises to nearly 3000m, is a sight to behold.
The area is renowned for its Wadis, terraced orchards, Damask rose water extraction, beekeeping, and the Aflaj system, a network of man-made water channels that meander through the mountains, nourishing the terraced gardens.
In August 2011, Sultan Qaboos appointed Jebel Akhdar as a protective natural resource, and now it’s one of the most visited places in the Sultanate.
Previously, the journey from Birkat al Mouz to the Sayq Plateau was a daunting 6-hour trek, accessible only by foot or donkey.
A winding road was carved into the mountains in 2006, opening up what was once a remote and hard-to-reach plateau. Today, the journey takes just 40 minutes — a dramatic change that makes Jebel Akhdar accessible to any traveler with a 4WD.
Getting to Jebel Akhdar With your 4WD Rented Car
The road to Jebel Akhdar is fully paved and in excellent condition — but access is strictly limited to 4WD vehicles only. Just after leaving Birkat al Mouz, you’ll reach a police checkpoint where you’ll need to show your driver’s license. If you’re in a 4WD, you’ll be allowed to continue without any issues.
The ascent to the Sayq Plateau, where the main village of Sayq is located, takes around 40–45 minutes. While the road is steep and winding, it’s safe and manageable.
Along the way, don’t forget to take in the incredible mountain views. This drive is one of the most scenic parts of the trip and a highlight in itself!
How to Get to Jebel Akhdar if You Didn’t Rent a 4WD Car
If you’re driving a sedan, stop at the parking area before the checkpoint. You’ll find local drivers offering 4WD rides up the mountain. They can take you to one location or give you a full tour of the area. The return ride can be pricey, but the mountain experience is worth it.
Some accommodations in Jebel Akhdar offer pick-up and drop-off services for guests. However, you’ll still need a car to explore once you’re on the plateau.
Another option is to rent a 4WD in Birkat al Mouz for a few days.
Where to Stay in Jebel Akhdar?
Several hotels in Jebel Akhdar have different price points, so you can always find something that fits your budget.
If you want to splurge, opt for the most luxurious hotel in the area: Anantara Al Jabal Resort, a government-funded project focused on high-end tourism.
Green View Hotel is a mid-range option, offering panoramic views of the mountain range and surrounding valleys. The hotel caters to those looking for a balance between affordability and comfort, making it suitable for travelers who want a good experience without breaking the bank.
DusitD2 Naseem Resort is a luxury resort that offers a high-end experience in the stunning mountains of the region. With stunning views, excellent dining options, and various wellness and outdoor activities, it provides a perfect retreat for those seeking comfort and luxury in the mountains of Oman.
But if you’re looking for an authentic Omani stay, I highly recommend staying at The Cliff Guest House in Al Suwgra village. The rooms are carved into the mountains and have facilities like bathrooms and lighting. Despite the small number of rooms, it’s likely to be alone during your stay. The family in charge of the place cooks the food using products from their garden.
Day 8. Jebel Akhdar
The Three Mountain Villages’ Morning Hike
Jebel Akhdar is truly a sight to behold. Its terraced orchards, carefully cultivated for centuries, cascade down the mountain slopes. These vibrant terraces grow pomegranates, olives, dates, apricots, garlic, and even fragrant Damask roses. Walking among them feels like stepping into a living, breathing tapestry of Omani tradition and natural beauty.
One of the best experiences in Jebel Akhdar is taking a spectacular hike through the three mountain villages of Al Ayn, Al Aqar, and Ash Shirayjah. The walk through the terraced fields along the narrow walls of the Aflaj system is truly wonderful!
Since these villages are still working farmsteads, please dress appropriately by covering your knees and elbows. It’s also important to note that picking up fruits or vegetables is strictly forbidden.

Visit a Rose Farm in Bloom
If you’re visiting Jebel Akhdar between March and April, don’t miss the chance to explore a traditional rose farm during harvest season. The mountains come alive with the scent of Damask roses, which have been grown here for generations.
Over 4,000 rose bushes bloom across the terraces, turning the landscape into a sea of soft pink. Local farmers handpick the petals in the early morning and use traditional distillation methods to produce rose water, a treasured Omani product.
It’s a beautiful and fragrant glimpse into local life — and one of the most memorable experiences in any Oman road trip itinerary.
Wadi Bani Habib Afternoon Hike
This afternoon hike is relatively easy and suitable for most fitness levels — no need to worry. The trail begins with a steep descent into the wadi, offering sweeping views over the abandoned village of Wadi Bani Habib.
Once a thriving community, the village was deserted over 40 years ago as residents moved to more modern settlements. Today, crumbling stone houses with collapsed roofs and weathered walls are all that remain.
As you explore the ruins, you’ll spot faded wall paintings, broken pots, shoes, clothes, and old books — silent witnesses to a life once lived here.
The climb back up is more demanding but absolutely worth it for the views and the peaceful atmosphere.
If you’re visiting in spring, the wadi comes alive with blossoming pomegranate, almond, peach, and olive trees, creating a stunning contrast against the rugged mountain backdrop.
Day 9. Al Suwgra Forgotten Village – A Hidden Gem in Our Oman Road Trip Itinerary
Distance: 10 kilometers, one way, 4WD needed
Access to Al Suwgra is via a steep, unpaved mountain road starting from the main village of Sayq. The 10-kilometer scenic drive is one of the highlights of this Oman road trip itinerary.
Despite Jebel Akhdar’s growing popularity, Al Suwgra remains a hidden gem tucked deep in the mountains. Few travelers know about this secluded 450-year-old village.
Unlike many abandoned villages, Al Suwgra was revitalized in recent years to support local tourism.
To reach the village, you’ll need to hike down a valley, cross a wooden bridge, and then climb up the other side.
It may sound challenging, but the trail is well-maintained and easy to follow. You’ll find viewing platforms, proper stairs, and shaded rest areas along the way.
Native trees along the path are labeled, and in spring, the terraces bloom with roses, pomegranates, and dates.
At the top, a small café awaits — and it serves some of the best specialty coffee in Oman. Enjoy your drink with incredible valley views, and chat with local staff to learn more about the village’s history.
After the café, continue walking until you reach the most scenic canyon viewpoint. You can wander as long as you like.
Visiting Al Suwgra is easily one of the best things to do in Jebel Akhdar. It’s peaceful, authentic, and leaves a lasting impression.
For the rest of the day, relax by your hotel pool, stroll through Sayq, or sip a warm cup of karak tea.

Day 10. Jebel Akhdar – Nizwa – Misfat Al Abriyeen (Misfah al Abriyyin)
Distance: 100 kilometers, 2 hours, no 4WD needed once you leave Jebel Akhdar area
Nizwa
It’s time to leave the mountains and return to civilization. The first stop of the day is Nizwa, the former capital of Oman. It’s a major attraction and a must-see on any Oman road trip itinerary.
Nizwa is the largest city in the region and is famous for its impressive 17th-century fortress.
Nizwa fortress, with its warm sandstone hues and geometric block design, offers photographers countless unique angles that inspire creativity.
Another must-visit spot is the Nizwa Souq, where you can shop for traditional handicrafts, dates, and spices. The peaceful atmosphere lets you fully immerse yourself in local culture, while the friendly Omani merchants are always happy to have a chat.
After exploring the Nizwa Fort and the Souq, it’s time to find a peaceful spot to unwind with a cup of coffee or karak.
Anat Coffee House is a must-visit during this day trip. This gem blends modern and traditional elements, transporting you back centuries. If time permits, take a leisurely stroll along the palm trees after this break.
From Nizwa, drive to Misfah Al Abriyeen. The village will be your home for the next three nights.
If you wish, you can choose to stay in the old Misfah. Parking is outside the village; from there you’ll have to walk to the accommodation.
Another option is to choose accommodation in the new Misfah, with lovely views over the old village.
We found a lovely guesthouse in the village’s new part and enjoyed the views over the old Misfat from our terrace.

Day 11. Misfah Al Abriyeen & Al Hamra
Distance: 7 kilometers, 15 minutes drive, no 4WD needed
Misfah Al Abriyeen is one of the charming traditional villages in North Oman. It is nestled amidst rocky mountains, palm trees and flourishing fruit trees.
The village is renowned for its traditional mud-brick houses, and a leisurely stroll through its narrow pathways and terraced gardens is one of the top activities to enjoy in Misfat Al Abriyeen.
The village’s serene ambiance, undisturbed by the hustle and bustle of modern life, and its stunning mountain backdrop create a truly picturesque setting. It’s a place where you can truly unwind and connect with nature.
Just 7 kilometers away from Misfat al Abriyeen lies one of the most well-preserved ancient towns in the Sultanate: Al Hamra.
Nestled at the base of the Hajar Mountain range, the village of Al Hamra has retained its timeless charm. As you journey along the road, stop at the scenic viewpoints to capture the breathtaking surroundings.
Wander through the weathered structures of the old village and transport yourself back in time, imagining the lives of its former inhabitants.
For a deeper immersion into Omani heritage, a visit to the Bait Al Safah Living Museum offers insight into traditional practices like coffee bean roasting, oil extraction, and bread making.
If you’re lucky, you can even taste some homemade bread and have a cup of coffee. Always ask permission when taking photos of the women. Usually, they don’t like to be photographed.
Additionally, you’ll encounter the Aflaj irrigation system, a vital network that sustains agricultural areas with water.
Day 12. Jebel Shams – Another Highlight of This Oman Road TripTtinerary
Distance from Misfah Al Abriyeen: 50 kilometers, 1h30′, no 4WD needed
On this day, you’ll get the chance to visit Wadi Ghul, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Middle East. It stands as the largest and deepest canyon in the entire Middle East and the second largest in the world, offering an awe-inspiring experience to witness nature’s grandeur.
Jebel Shams is Oman’s highest peak, located inside the Wadi Ghul canyon, and it’s a must-see place.
Surprisingly, you don’t need a 4WD car to access the area. Although the road can be rough and steep at times, we saw 2WD cars manage to reach the parking lot of the Balcony trail.
The drive will treat you to breathtaking views of steep, humbling cliffs, intricately carved canyons, and incredible rock formations.
The famous “W6 Balcony Trail” offers an approximately 3-hour return trip along the rim of one of the canyon’s most scenic spots. The views from here are simply out of this world.
The 8-kilometer trail is moderate, but be sure to wear appropriate footwear for comfort. We’ve seen tourists wearing flip-flops, which I’m afraid I have to disagree with.
Once you’ve completed the trail, reward yourself with a specialty coffee at Cliff Café. Here, you can relax, unwind, and relish the memories of your adventure.

Day 13. Misfat Al Abriyeen – Bahla Fort – Muscat
Distance: 209 kilometers, 2h30′, no 4WD needed
Anticipation for the next leg of your adventure will fill you as you prepare to discover more of Oman’s wonders.
Another must-stop on any Oman road trip is Bahla Fort, a true gem of Omani heritage. This UNESCO World Heritage site instantly transports you back in time, offering a glimpse into Oman’s rich history and architectural brilliance.
Even a short stop here is worth it. Wander through the fort’s labyrinthine corridors, peek inside its chambers, meeting rooms, and small mosque, and imagine the lives of those who lived here centuries ago.
Climb to the top of the fort’s walls and you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape — a perfect spot for photos and soaking in the fort’s timeless atmosphere.
After this impressive visit, it’s time to continue your journey towards Muscat. If time allows, you can return to the Mutrah Souq and do some more shopping. Or relax with a traditional Omani dinner.
Day 14. Departure Day
It’s never easy to say goodbye to a place that has touched your heart. As you return your rental car and prepare for your flight, you might already feel a bittersweet mix of gratitude and sadness.
Oman has shared its breathtaking landscapes, warm hospitality, and unforgettable moments with you. You’ll carry these memories with you long after you leave.
