You really don’t need to stress about transportation on your first day in Brașov — this is very much a walk-everywhere kind of city. The Old Town is small, super pedestrian-friendly, and honestly perfect for getting a little lost on purpose while wandering those charming cobblestone streets.
As you walk around, you’ll keep stumbling on beautiful medieval buildings, cute cafés you’ll want to stop at immediately, and little shops that give you a feel for the city’s history and personality. Mount Tâmpa is right there, easily reachable from the city center, so you can head up for those amazing views and then come back down ready for a cozy, traditional meal.

Start Your Day at the Council Square
Located at the heart of the Old Town, the Council Square (Piata Sfatului) is where you start your 2 days in Brasov adventure. This square has been the city’s center since medieval times, with weekly markets held here starting in 1364. Lined by elegant Baroque buildings with vibrant façades, the busy square is a perfect blend of old and modern life that will soon get your heart.
The first thing to notice is the Council House (Casa Sfatului), which is one of the symbols of Brasov. Next, give yourself a moment to really soak in the square’s energy. Just slow down and watch life happen around you — people wandering by, some deep in conversation, others simply enjoying a quiet moment to themselves. Visit the Majestic Black Church
Brasov’s main attraction is the Black Church (Biserica Neagră) — and yep, it really is the largest Gothic church in Southeastern Europe. Bet you didn’t see that coming.
Dedicated to Saint Mary, the church was built between 1383 and 1477, and its dramatic name comes from a devastating fire in 1689 that blackened its walls. The damage was so severe that the restoration took nearly a century, which honestly makes it even more impressive today.
As striking as the exterior is, don’t skip the inside. For a small entry fee, you can step in and admire one of Eastern Europe’s largest pipe organs, with an incredible 4,000 pipes. It’s jaw-dropping even if you’re not usually into churches. While you’re there, take your time with the beautiful collection of Oriental rugs, donated by German merchants in the 17th and 18th centuries. It’s an unexpected detail and one of those things that makes the Black Church feel truly unique.
Explore the Medieval Black and White Towers
After soaking up the buzz of the Old Town, it’s nice to slow things down a bit — and this is the perfect moment to do it. From the Black Church, head toward the Șchei area and the Cheu River, then follow the short, scenic path up to the Black Tower (Turnul Negru). It’s an easy walk and a lovely way to experience a quieter side of Brasov while strolling along the old medieval walls.
Built in the 15th century, the Black Tower got its name after being struck by lightning, which caused a fire. Today, though, it’s all about the views. From the top, you’ll get gorgeous panoramas over the Old Town, the Black Church, Tâmpa Mountain, and the Carpathians stretching out in the background — seriously, don’t rush this spot.
From here, continue along the peaceful forest path to reach the White Tower (Turnul Alb), another medieval gem. Here, you will find Saint Catherine’s Gate, the only remaining entrance gate to the old part of the city. Dating back to 1559, the structure is really stunning, offering a glimpse into the city’s past. Its name comes from the monastery of St. Catherine, once located here.
Above the gate, you will notice Brasov’s coat of arms, a crown on top of tree roots. If you walk through the gate, you will find a small, shaded courtyard where you can sit on benches and relax. The chances of finding some Instagram enthusiasts here are quite high. There isn’t much to do here, but it’s on the way to the next stop on your 2 days in Sibiu agenda, so it’s worth a quick stop.
Step Inside Beth Israel Synagogue
Leave Catherine’s Gate, pass the lovely Schei Gate, and you will find the Beth Israel Synagogue inside a courtyard. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, it is the heart of the Jewish community in Brașov. During World War II, the synagogue suffered some damage, but nothing severe. It was renovated in 1949.
The building complex includes a community center, a monument commemorating the Jews who were killed during the Holocaust, and a kosher restaurant.
For a small fee, you can visit the synagogue and get a glimpse of this beautiful place. It might be one of the most stunning sites you encounter during your 2 days in Brasov stay.
Find the Narrowest Street in Eastern Europe
A few steps from the synagogue, on the same side of the road, you will discover one of the narrowest streets in Europe. You can’t miss it as there is a tiny sign marking the entrance to the street. Rope Street (Strada Sforii) is so narrow that standing there with the arms outstretched is impossible.
Dating back to the 13th century, the street was initially used as an access route for firefighters. It measures between 111 and 135 centimeters in width and is only 80 meters long.
The likelihood of encountering many people, often in groups, is relatively high. However, if you wait a bit, you may find a moment where you have a place all to yourself. I waited about ten minutes until two large groups of visitors left, and then I found myself alone. I was able to embrace the silence and take as many photos as I wanted. It was such a treat!

If your schedule is tight—or you simply prefer a more leisurely ascent—you can opt for the nostalgic experience of a 1950s-era cable car. This charming cable car, the first of its kind in Romania, offers a unique and scenic journey that allows you to soak in the stunning landscape as you ascend. Due to lack of time and since the mountain is a brown bear habitat, I chose the cable car option.
Once you arrive at the upper cable car station, a short walk along the path behind the iconic Brașov sign awaits you, where breathtaking town views unfold before you.
Stroll the Streets of Old Town
Next, it’s time to return to Old Town and explore its streets for a while. Take a stroll down Republicii Street (Strada Republicii), a pedestrian street lined with charming shops, restaurants, and vibrant buildings. It’s perfect for browsing or enjoying a local snack.
Enjoy a hearty Romanian meal like sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls) or mici (grilled sausages) in a cozy, rustic setting at a traditional restaurant. Consider La Ceaun, a place known for its traditional Romanian dishes. Plenty of restaurants with outdoor seating allow you to enjoy local specialties or international cuisine.

Straja Fortress (Cetatuia de pe Straja)
If you have a bit of extra time, Straja Fortress is one of those underrated spots you really shouldn’t skip during your 2 days in Brasov. Sitting quietly on a hill above the city, it offers beautiful panoramic views over Brașov and the surrounding area. It’s usually much less crowded than other viewpoints.
What started as a simple watchtower slowly evolved into a small but solid fortress, complete with defensive walls, bastions, and shooting towers designed for strategic control. Back in the day, it played an important role in Brasov’s fortification system and remained active for military purposes until the end of World War I.
After that, the fortress had quite a few different lives. It was used as a prison, a storage space, and even a police jamming station during the Ceaușescu era. Following the political changes in 1990, the site was finally opened to the public and, for a while, even hosted a medieval-themed restaurant. Today, it’s a fascinating mix of history, views, and quiet atmosphere.
There are no entrance fees to access the fortress, and you can wander around the compound and envision life from a different past.
Those who enjoy hiking can reach the fortress on foot. The hike up to the top is a bit steep but manageable for most people, and it offers spectacular views of the city as you ascend. The trail is well-marked and takes about 20-30 minutes from Council Square (Piata Sfatului).

Peles Castle (Castelul Peleș)
Set aside a few hours to visit Peles Castle, one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. The castle is set in a gorgeous forested landscape in Sinaia, a fairly 40-minute drive from Brasov. The design of Peles Castle is a fusion of various architectural styles, including Neo-Renaissance, Gothic Revival, and Germanic influences. The result is an eclectic and fairy-tale-like structure with turrets, spires, and ornate details.
The interior of Peleș Castle is as spectacular as its exterior, featuring a blend of elaborate rooms with Baroque, Renaissance, and Moorish elements. Some highlights include the “Hall of Honor” with its grand staircase, the Music Room, and the Armory, which houses a vast collection of armor and weapons.
