We spent time exploring Mahebourg by car, wandering through its streets, stopping at the market, visiting the Rault Biscuit Factory, and exploring some beautiful nearby beaches. What we loved most was that Mahebourg never felt like a place we had to rush through. There was always another little street to explore, a local spot to try, or a view worth stopping for.

About Mahebourg

Located on the southeast coast of Mauritius, Mahebourg is one of the island’s most historic towns and a great place to experience a different side of Mauritius. Once the island’s capital, the town still reflects its French and British colonial heritage through its historic buildings, waterfront, churches, and museums.

Mahebourg began as a small fishing village and was named after Mahé de Labourdonnais, the French governor of Mauritius in the 18th century. Today, it remains a laid-back town where local life, history, and the beautiful surrounding lagoon come together.

Unlike the more developed resort areas of Mauritius, Mahebourg feels less polished and more authentic. You can wander through the local market, walk along the waterfront, discover historic sites. Or simply use the town as a base for exploring nearby places such as Blue Bay and Pointe d’Esny.

Mahebourg is also well located for a day trip from other parts of the island. It is about 50 kilometers from Port Louis, 73 kilometers from Grand Baie, and around 62 kilometers from Le Morne. Whether you are interested in history, local culture, or want to see a different side of Mauritius, Mahebourg is well worth adding to your itinerary.

Why Visit Mahebourg?

If you want to experience more than Mauritius’ beautiful beaches, Mahebourg is a great place to start. This historic town offers a glimpse into the island’s local life, culture, and colonial past, away from the larger resort areas.

Mahebourg feels more authentic and laid-back than many of Mauritius’ popular beach destinations. You can wander through its colorful market, stroll along the waterfront, visit historic sites, and discover the stories behind one of the island’s oldest towns.

And the best part? You don’t have to choose between history and the beach. Mahebourg is close to some of the southeast’s most beautiful coastal spots, including Blue Bay and Pointe d’Esny. It’s easy to combine a visit to the town with time by the lagoon.

How Much Time Do You Need in Mahebourg?

How much time you need in Mahebourg depends on what you want to see. If you are mainly interested in the historic town and its main attractions, half a day is enough to see some of the best places to visit in Mahebourg. However, I recommend spending a full day if you also want to explore the nearby beaches and lagoon.

Half day in Mahebourg:

A few hours is enough to explore the historic center, visit the local market, walk along the waterfront, and visit the Rault Biscuit Factory. This is a good option if you are short on time or are visiting Mahebourg as part of a larger southeast Mauritius itinerary.

Full day in Mahebourg:

With a full day, you can take your time exploring the town and then head to nearby Blue Bay or Pointe d’Esny. You could also add a boat trip or snorkeling in the Blue Bay Marine Park. This will make for a much more complete day in this part of Mauritius.

If you plan to explore Mahebourg, as well as the surrounding southeast coast, I would definitely allow a full day. It gives you enough time to experience the town without rushing and still enjoy some time by the lagoon.

How to Get to Mahebourg?

We explored Mauritius by rental car, and it was one of the best decisions we made. Having our own car meant we could drive around the island at our own pace, stop whenever something caught our eye, and change our plans whenever we wanted.

Getting to Mahebourg by car is easy. We found driving on the southeast coast particularly relaxed compared to busier parts of the island. There is also plenty of parking around Mahebourg, so we never had trouble finding a place to leave the car and explore the town on foot.

Driving in Mauritius is on the left-hand side of the road, so keep that in mind if you are not used to it. Once you get comfortable with driving on the left, having a car makes it much easier to explore Mahebourg and the surrounding southeast coast.

We also loved having the freedom to combine Mahebourg with nearby places such as Blue Bay and Pointe d’Esny on the same day. If you plan to explore more of Mauritius rather than stay in one resort area, I would definitely consider renting a car.

If you prefer not to drive, you can also visit Mahebourg as part of a guided tour or hire a private driver for the day. This can be a convenient option if you want to explore the main Mahebourg attractions without worrying about navigation or parking. 10 Best Places to Visit in Mahebourg

1. Walk Around Mahebourg Waterfront

The Mahebourg Waterfront is one of the best places to start exploring the town. It is relaxed, local, and feels completely different from Mauritius’ resort areas. You don’t really need an itinerary here. Just park the car, walk along the waterfront, and take in the views across the lagoon.

One of the first things you’ll notice is Mouchoir Rouge, the tiny islet sitting just offshore. Along the way, you’ll see traditional wooden boats, local fishermen, and plenty of everyday life happening around the waterfront.

Keep walking and you’ll come across the old Mahebourg train station, a small wooden building. It is easy to miss if you don’t know it’s there. The building is a lovely reminder of the town’s past and one of those little details that makes exploring Mahebourg more interesting.

Further along, look out for the Swami Sivananda statue, made from cement, stones, and pebbles. It is an unexpected sight along the promenade and a small reflection of the cultural and spiritual diversity of Mauritius.

The waterfront is also a lovely place to visit early in the morning. The wooden pier is a great spot to watch the sunrise, while continuing your walk gives you a chance to see the fishing boats and local fishermen at work.

Visiting on a Monday? Don’t miss the Mahebourg Market. Stalls spread through the town and waterfront area, selling fresh produce, spices, seafood, meat, clothes, and local products. It is one of the best ways to experience everyday life in Mahebourg.

For us, simply walking along the waterfront was one of the nicest ways to get a feel for the town. It isn’t about ticking off attractions. It’s about slowing down and seeing a more local side of Mauritius.

2. Explore the Mahebourg Market

If you want to experience the local side of Mahebourg, make some time for the Mahebourg Market, also known as the Covered Market or Bazarre. Located just a short walk from the waterfront, it is one of the best places in Mahebourg to see everyday life.

Inside, you’ll find stalls filled with fresh fruit and vegetables, spices, flowers, clothes, local products, and all sorts of things you probably weren’t planning to buy. The market is colorful, lively, and unapologetically local. Exactly the kind of place we enjoy exploring when we travel.

The morning is the best time to visit, when the market is at its liveliest. You’ll see plenty of locals doing their daily shopping. You can easily leave your car around the waterfront and walk the short distance to the market. It’s also easy to combine with a stroll along the Mahebourg Waterfront.

And if you happen to be in town on a Monday, you’ll get an even bigger market experience. The Monday market spreads beyond the covered market area, with additional stalls selling everything from fresh produce and spices to clothes and other local goods.

One thing we particularly recommend looking for is vanilla. If you love vanilla, the Mahebourg Market is worth checking out. We found it to be one of the more affordable places to buy it in Mauritius.

More than just a place to shop, the market gives you a glimpse into everyday life in Mahebourg. For us, that is exactly what makes it one of the best things to do in Mahebourg.

3. Wander Through The Historic Center

One of the best ways to experience Mahebourg is to walk through its historic center without following a particular route. After the waterfront and the market, this is where you can slow down and take in the everyday character of the town.

As you wander through the streets, you’ll come across colorful Creole houses, old colonial buildings, small local shops, and street art tucked away in unexpected corners.

Some streets feel a little worn around the edges, but that’s part of what gives Mahebourg its character and makes exploring it so enjoyable.

Keep your camera ready! You’ll find plenty of little details worth stopping for, from colorful facades and handmade crafts to quirky shops and scenes of everyday life.

We also found the atmosphere here noticeably different from the more polished resort areas of Mauritius. People were friendly and quick to greet us. The relaxed, local feel made simply walking around one of our favorite things to do in Mahebourg.

If you’re looking for places to visit in Mahebourg beyond the main attractions, don’t underestimate the historic center. You don’t need a map or a long list of sights. Give yourself some time to wander and see what you find.

4. Discover Mahebourg’s Religious Heritage

One of the things that makes Mahebourg so interesting to explore is the mix of cultures and religions you’ll find within a relatively small area. As you walk through town, you’ll come across churches, mosques, and Hindu temples, each reflecting a different part of Mauritius’ history and cultural heritage.

One of the most recognizable landmarks is Notre Dame des Anges Church, with its butter-colored neo-Gothic facade and beautiful stained-glass windows. Built in 1849 and restored several times over the years, the church is one of Mahebourg’s most distinctive historic buildings.

A short walk away is the Jummah Mosque, with its green-and-white facade. The current building dates from the 1970s and replaced an earlier mosque built in 1870. Even if you don’t go inside, it is worth seeing as you explore the streets around the historic center.

You can also visit Shri Vinayagar Seedalamen Kovil, a small Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. The temple is colorful and beautifully decorated, and when we visited, the person looking after it was happy to show us around and explain a little about the site.

Together, these places give you a glimpse into Mauritius’s cultural diversity and remind you there is much more to the island than its beaches and lagoons.

Tip: We found it easiest to leave the car near the Mahebourg Waterfront and explore this part of town on foot. That way, you can take your time and easily combine the religious sites with the historic center and other places to visit in Mahebourg.

5. Visit the Mahebourg National History Museum

If you are interested in the history of Mauritius, the Mahebourg National History Museum is a place worth knowing about, even though it is currently closed to visitors for renovation.

We actually discovered the museum somewhat by accident. We hadn’t planned on visiting it, but a sudden downpour sent us looking for somewhere to shelter for more than half an hour. What started as an unexpected stop turned into a chance to learn more about Mauritius’s history, and I’m glad we did.

The museum is housed in Château Gheude, a historic building dating back to the 18th century. Its collections focus on the island’s colonial and maritime history. Exhibits include old coins, weapons, shipwreck artifacts, and other objects connected to Mauritius’ past. The museum is particularly known for its collection of remains connected to the island’s extinct giant tortoises and the dodo.

The museum was previously known as the Naval Museum. It offered visitors an interesting look at the naval battles and colonial history that shaped Mauritius.

Important: The Mahebourg National History Museum has been closed for renovation since December 2025. Check the official information before planning your visit. Even though you cannot visit it right now, I would still keep it on your list of places to visit in Mahebourg for a future trip. And if you are exploring the historic center, its location makes it easy to include when it reopens.

6. Visit the Rault Biscuit Factory

When we decided to visit Mahebourg, I was immediately drawn to the idea of visiting the Rault Biscuit Factory, also known as Biscuiterie Rault. I love discovering small, family-run businesses when we travel, especially when they are connected to the local culture. So, I was curious to see how these famous Mauritian biscuits are actually made.

And it turned out to be one of our favorite experiences in Mahebourg.

The Rault family has been making Manioc Biscuits since 1870, keeping the traditional production process alive for generations. The biscuits are made from cassava, also known as manioc. It’s a root that has long been an important part of the Mauritian diet.

Getting there is part of the adventure. From the old town, cross Cavendish Bridge and follow your navigation app through the small streets. The road gets increasingly narrow. Don’t be surprised if you start wondering whether you’re going the right way. Once you reach the factory, there is a designated area where you can leave your car.

The visit includes a guided tour of the small factory, where you can see how the biscuits are made. What we found particularly interesting was how much of the process is still done by hand, from preparing the cassava flour to baking and packaging the biscuits.

And then comes the best part: the tasting.

You can try different flavors, including butter, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, coconut, and chocolate. We obviously didn’t leave empty-handed and bought a few packs to take home. Our favorites were the butter and vanilla biscuits.

We were lucky (or perhaps unlucky) with the weather that day, because it was raining again. There were no other visitors around, so we had the place almost entirely to ourselves. Sitting there with a cup of tea and tasting the biscuits while listening to the rain hitting the roof made the whole experience feel wonderfully old-fashioned.

For me, this is exactly the kind of experience that makes traveling interesting. The Rault Factory isn’t a major tourist attraction or a polished resort experience. It is a small family business keeping a piece of Mauritian tradition alive. It was easily one of our favorite places to visit in Mahebourg.

Practical information: The Rault Biscuit Factory is open Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 3:30 PM. It is closed on weekends and public holidays. Guided tours and tastings are available.

7. Try Mahebourg Restaurants and Street Food

No visit to Mahebourg would be complete without trying some local Mauritian food. The town has plenty of small restaurants and street food stalls where you can eat the kind of food locals actually enjoy, without the resort-style prices.

One place we came across is Coin Casse Croute, a popular local spot known for traditional Mauritian dishes. It can get busy, and you may have to wait for a table. But that is usually a good sign when it comes to small local restaurants. If you want to try authentic food in Mahebourg, it is worth checking out.

And if you want to go beyond simply choosing a restaurant, you can join a Mahebourg Village Food Tour. A local guide takes you around the town, stopping at small restaurants and street food vendors. Along the way, you’ll discover some of the dishes that are part of everyday Mauritian cuisine.

Depending on the tour, you may get to try local favorites such as dholl puri, boulettes, fried noodles, and seafood or meat dishes served with rice, lentils, and salads. You’ll also get a bit of history and context about Mahebourg along the way. This makes the experience about more than just eating.

For us, trying local food is always part of getting to know a destination. And Mahebourg is a particularly good place to do that. Trying local food is one of the best things to do in Mahebourg and a great way to experience the town’s everyday side.

Tip: Don’t worry about finding a fancy restaurant. Some of the most memorable food experiences in Mauritius can happen at small local spots where the menu is simple, and the atmosphere is relaxed.

8. Visit Pointe d’Esny Beach

Once you’ve explored the town and tried some local food, it’s time to head towards the coast.

Just a few kilometers south of Mahebourg, Pointe d’Esny Beach is a beautiful stretch of white sand with clear, shallow water and views towards Lion Mountain.

The beach is tucked away behind a residential area, so it can be a little confusing to find the first time. Look out for the “Pedestrian access to the public beach” signs and follow the narrow paths through the houses. There is no dedicated parking lot, but you can usually leave your car along the street and walk to the beach.

Pointe d’Esny stretches for more than two kilometers, so it’s easy to find a quieter spot once you reach the sand. It also feels more peaceful than some of Mauritius’ better-known beaches.

We didn’t find it to be our favorite beach for swimming because of the coral and shallow areas, but we loved walking along the shore. The combination of white sand, turquoise water, and Lion Mountain in the distance makes it a beautiful place to slow down.

If you enjoy snorkeling, bring your mask and snorkel. The shallow reef close to shore makes Pointe d’Esny Beach a popular spot for exploring the underwater world, although conditions can vary depending on the weather and sea.

For us, Pointe d’Esny was less about spending the whole day swimming and more about enjoying the scenery and peaceful atmosphere.

Tip: Combine Pointe d’Esny with Blue Bay Marine Park and Mahebourg on the same day. It is also an easy stop to add to a wider South Mauritius itinerary, especially if you want to explore more of the southeast coast.

9. Visit Blue Bay Beach

Just a few kilometers from Mahebourg, Blue Bay Beach is one of my favorite places in this part of Mauritius. I can’t quite explain what it is about the place. We’ve been here twice, and both times I loved the peaceful atmosphere. And the beautiful views across the lagoon towards Île des Deux Cocos.

The beach itself is not particularly large, but the setting is beautiful. The lagoon is protected by the offshore coral reef, which usually keeps the water relatively calm. This makes Blue Bay a popular spot for families and anyone looking for an easy place to swim.

The clear water is also a big part of the attraction. You don’t have to go far from shore to appreciate the marine life.

If you have time, don’t just come for a quick swim. Find a spot under the trees, take a walk along the shore, and simply enjoy the view. For me, this is one of those places to visit in Mahebourg where the setting is just as important as the activity.

Tip: Blue Bay can get much busier on weekends, when it is popular with locals for picnics and gatherings. If you prefer a quieter experience, try to visit during the week. If you’re visiting on a weekend and want somewhere more peaceful, Pointe d’Esny Beach is a good alternative.

10. Take a Boat Trip from Mahebourg

One of the best ways to experience this part of Mauritius is from the water. The lagoon around Mahebourg is dotted with small islands and surrounded by coral reefs. There are several boat trips that depart from Blue Bay, Pointe d’Esny, and nearby Pointe Jerome.

If you have a full day to spare, a boat trip is a great addition to your list of things to do in Mahebourg. Here are two options worth considering, depending on how much time you have.

Half-Day Blue Bay Marine Park Snorkeling Trip

If you don’t want to spend a whole day on a boat, a half-day excursion from Blue Bay Beach is a good option. These trips typically combine snorkeling in the Blue Bay Marine Park with a visit to the nearby islands and a Creole-style picnic.

You’ll have the chance to explore different parts of the lagoon, snorkel among tropical fish and coral, and spend some time on the beach before heading back to Blue Bay.

Full-Day Catamaran Cruise to Ile aux Cerfs

If you have a full day, I’d go for a catamaran cruise to Ile aux Cerfs. We did this trip and absolutely loved the time spent on the water.

The cruise departs from the southeast coast and usually includes breakfast, snorkeling, a BBQ lunch onboard, and time to explore Ile aux Cerfs. After spending time on the catamaran, we particularly enjoyed getting off the boat and walking along the island’s beaches.

Ile aux Cerfs is one of the most popular day trips in Mauritius, so don’t expect to have the island entirely to yourself. However, if you walk away from the busiest areas, you can still find quieter stretches of beach where you can simply enjoy the scenery.

For us, the combination of a day on the catamaran, snorkeling, good food, and time on the island made this one of our favorite experiences in southeast Mauritius.

Is Mahebourg Worth Visiting?

Absolutely. If you want to experience more than the beaches and resorts of Mauritius, Mahebourg is well worth adding to your itinerary.

What I enjoyed most was how easy it was to slow down here. We could wander through the historic center, browse the market, stop for local food, visit the Rault Biscuit Factory, and then drive a few minutes to beautiful beaches and the lagoon. Having a rental car made it especially easy to explore Mahebourg and the surrounding southeast coast at our own pace.

You don’t need several days to explore the best places to visit in Mahebourg. Half a day is enough if you want to focus on the town, while a full day gives you time to combine Mahebourg with Pointe d’Esny, Blue Bay, or a boat trip.

For me, Mahebourg was one of those places that reminded me why I love exploring beyond the obvious tourist spots. It may not have the polished feel of Mauritius’ big resort areas, but that’s exactly what makes it worth visiting. If you have the time, don’t just pass through. Slow down, wander around, and see what you discover.
