Let’s be honest — planning a trip to Mauritius can feel a little overwhelming (in the best way). Between the postcard-perfect beaches, dramatic mountains, tropical lagoons, and lush green landscapes, how do you choose the best tours in Mauritius?

During our two weeks on the island, we wanted to experience as much as possible. We explored most of Mauritius by rental car, visited many of these places on our own, and joined a few tours that simply aren’t the same without a local guide. I’ve even included one experience we didn’t have time for but would happily book on our next visit because it comes so highly recommended.

Whether you want to hike Le Morne, swim with dolphins, kayak through mangroves, or spend the day sailing on a catamaran, this guide brings together the experiences I genuinely think are worth your time.

While renting a car is still my favorite way to explore Mauritius, there are a few activities I’d always recommend booking as a tour, including catamaran cruises, dolphin trips, the Le Morne hike, and certain canyoning and waterfall adventures.

Here are the 10 best tours in Mauritius that I’d recommend based on our experience exploring the island.

Top 10 Tours In Mauritius

1. Hike to Le Morne Brabant – A View Worth the Climb

Some hikes take your breath away just from the views. Others because of the story they carry. And then there’s Le Morne Brabant, which does both.

This 556-meter mountain on the southwest coast of Mauritius looks majestic from below: rugged, dramatic, almost mythical. But it’s not just a beautiful place. It holds one of the most heartbreaking and powerful stories in the island’s history.

Back in the days of slavery, Le Morne was a place of refuge. Escaped enslaved people climbed up this mountain to hide, hoping for freedom. But life at the top was harsh. And when freedom finally came, some mistook it for a trick. Fearing they’d be captured again, they jumped from the cliffs. They chose death over a return to slavery.

It’s heavy, I know. But it’s also deeply moving and it’s why Le Morne is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s not just a hike; it’s a tribute.

And if you do choose to hike it, well, get ready. The trail starts easy, peaceful even. Birds chirping, filtered sunlight through the trees. But then the second half kicks inand it gets real. You’ll be using your hands, scrambling up rocks, maybe questioning your life choices for a moment or two.

But then you reach the top.

And wow. You’re standing above everything—the endless Indian Ocean stretching out beneath you, coral reefs glowing through the blue, green coastlines curling around the island. It honestly feels like standing at the edge of the world. And knowing the history of the place? That view hits differently.

🥾 Doing It On Your Own

Yes, you can hike Le Morne without a guide. The first part is manageable, and there’s a clear path through the forest. But once you reach the steep rock section, it gets challenging. You’ll need to use both hands and feet to climb, and there are no ropes or barriers to help you.

If you’re confident with heights, have decent fitness, and don’t mind a bit of crawling, you’ll be fine. Just take it slow and go early before the heat kicks in.

🧭 Going With a Guide

If you’re not sure about the climb or you just want to really understand the history while you’re doing it, then go with a guide.

He will help you through the tougher parts, show you the safest way up, and share stories about the mountain that bring it all to life. By the end of the tour, you will agree that this is one of the best tours in Mauritius.

🕒 Duration: 3–4 hours round trip

🎒 What to bring: Water, sunscreen, a hat, and good hiking shoes

☀️ Best time: Early morning for cooler weather and clearer views

2. See the Mind-Blowing Underwater Waterfall Illusion

Okay, if you want to experience something truly otherworldly in Mauritius, I seriously recommend booking a flight to see the famous underwater waterfall illusion. Trust me, it’s one of those things you have to see with your own eyes to believe.

Here’s the scoop: along the southwest coast, near Le Morne Brabant, the ocean creates an incredible optical illusion of a massive waterfall beneath the surface.

It’s not actually a waterfall, of course, it’s just sand and currents moving in a way that fools your eyes from above. But the effect? Totally surreal and absolutely stunning.

🛩️ How to See It

The best way to catch this view is by taking a seaplane flight. Flights range from quick 15-minute spins to longer, 80-minute tours that provide a comprehensive aerial view of the island’s beauty.

If your budget allows, this is a total splurge worth making. Floating above the island, watching the turquoise water swirl and drop like a hidden waterfall? It’s honestly one of the best tours in Mauritius for sure.

Heads Up. This one’s pretty weather-dependent. Cloudy or rainy days might cancel flights, so try to stay flexible and cross your fingers for clear skies. But when the sun’s out and the water’s calm, it’s pure magic.

3. Sail to the Northern Isles – Experience Paradise on One of the Best Tours in Mauritius

One of the best tours in Mauritius is a catamaran cruise to the Northern Isles. We hesitated at first, wondering if it could really offer more than the beautiful beaches we’d already seen. But by the end of the day, it turned out to be one of the absolute highlights of our trip. And without a doubt, one of the best tours in Mauritius.

girl on a beach on the Northern Isles in Mauritius

As you hop aboard the catamaran, you’re in for a full-day adventure. The trip starts with a peaceful one-hour sail across the sparkling turquoise waters toward the postcard-perfect Flat Island.

When you arrive, it’s almost surreal. White sandy beach, crystal-clear waters, and a total sense of calm. It’s the kind of place that feels untouched.

After a bit of swimming, wandering, or just soaking up the sun, the crew serves up a BBQ lunch right on board—complete with drinks, island music, and a laid-back vibe that’s hard to beat.

Then it’s off to Gabriel Island, known for its shallow lagoon and excellent snorkeling. If you’re into marine life, this is the spot. Expect colorful coral, tropical fish, and some of the clearest water you’ll find anywhere on the island.

On the way back, you’ll also pass by Coin de Mire, where there’s another chance to jump in and explore the reef one last time before sailing back to the mainland.

Why we loved it:

Even though we’d already spent time at some of the best beaches on the island, this catamaran trip felt like something extra special. Between the remote islands, the sea breeze, and the underwater world, it showed us a side of Mauritius you can’t reach by car. It’s no wonder it’s often listed among the best tours in Mauritius.

🕒 Duration: Full-day (approx. 7–8 hours)

🏊 What to bring: Swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, hat, and snorkel gear if you have your own (some tours provide it)

🍴 Includes: BBQ lunch, drinks, and plenty of time to swim, snorkel, and relax

4. Kayak Through Mangroves & Explore Amber Island – A Hidden Gem Among the Best Tours in Mauritius

If you’re looking to slow things down and connect with nature in a totally different way, this Amber Island kayak adventure is one of those peaceful, unexpected experiences that stays with you.

We didn’t know much about this tour before planning our trip. Still, it quickly stood out as something unique and now, I’d absolutely place it among the best tours in Mauritius, especially if you’re into quiet landscapes, light adventure, and off-the-beaten-path beauty.

girl kayaking through mangroves and exploring Amber Island

You’ll start your journey with a short 15-minute paddle from Bain de Rosnay Beach, located on the north coast. The water is calm, clear, and perfect for beginners or casual kayakers.

Along the way, you’ll glide through floating mangrove forests. It almost feels like you’re paddling through a secret, green tunnel. It’s one of the most peaceful parts of the island we’ve come across.

Once you reach Amber Island, the pace shifts from paddling to walking. Your guide will take you on a nature walk through the island’s untouched landscape, pointing out native plants and sharing stories about the area’s fascinating history, including ruins dating back to the 1700s.

To top it off, before heading back, you’ll stop at Ilot Bernache, a dreamy sandbank island where you can take a swim or soak in the beauty of the lagoon.

Why we love it:

This tour offers the kind of quiet, slow adventure that feels really special. Between the mangroves, the old ruins, and the hidden islets, it’s a great way to explore a side of Mauritius that’s far from the tourist crowds—but full of magic.

🕒 Duration: Around 3.5 to 4 hours

🌿 Perfect for: Nature lovers, couples, solo travelers, light adventure seekers

🎒 What to bring: Swimsuit, towel, water shoes or sandals, sunscreen, water bottle, waterproof phone case if you have one

5. Explore Port Louis — Street Food, Culture & City Vibes

Port Louis may not be the first place people think of when they dream of Mauritius, but let me tell you, the capital has its own special charm. It’s chaotic, colourful, loud, sometimes overwhelmingand honestly, completely worth the visit.

🥾 Doing It On Your Own

Start your adventure at the lively Caudan Waterfront. Grab a coffee and snap a photo under the colorful umbrella alley. Browse the local shops and craft stalls.

Then, head into the city and wander through the buzzing Central Market, where the energy, colors, and spices hit you all at once.

From there, make your way into Chinatown. It’s a little slice of history filled with character, street art, and great food if you’re ready for a snack break.

When you’re done exploring the streets, walk (or drive) up to Fort Adelaide, also known as La Citadelle. The view from the top? Totally worth the climb. You’ll get a sweeping panorama over the capital, the harbor, and the surrounding mountains.

If you enjoy exploring at your own pace, this makes for a really satisfying half-day trip — and a deeper feel for local life in Mauritius. Just wear comfy shoes, bring water, and be open to little detours.

6. Visit Île aux Cerfs – A Classic Stop on the Best Tours in Mauritius

I know what you might be thinking. Another catamaran trip? But trust me on this one: a visit to Île aux Cerfs is absolutely worth it. It’s hands-down one of the most beautiful places in Mauritius, and easily earns its spot among the best tours in Mauritius.

amazing empty beach on Île aux Cerfs - one of the best tours in Mauritius

You’ll start your day aboard the Island Hopper catamaran, sailing across the lagoon with the breeze in your hair. The ride itself is gorgeous, but the real magic begins when you arrive at Île aux Cerfs, a privately owned island known for its stunning beaches and vibrant turquoise waters.

Once there, you can swim in the calm, clear lagoon, try out optional water sports like parasailing or tube rides, or simply stroll the coastline and find your own quiet slice of paradise.

If you wander a little further from the main beach, you’ll discover peaceful coves and stretches of sand with hardly anyone else around. These more secluded areas were our favorite part: soft white sand, warm shallow water, and total island vibes.

💡 Why we loved it:

This isn’t just another boat tour. It’s an escape to a little tropical haven. And while it’s popular, it never felt overcrowded, especially if you venture beyond the main beach. It’s the kind of place you’ll want to come back to.

🕒 Duration: Half-day or full-day tours available

👙 Perfect for: Couples, families, beach lovers, and anyone craving chill island time

🎒 What to bring: Swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, hat, waterproof bag, camera

7. Explore the Northwest Coast on a Day Trip

This is one of those days in Mauritius that blends everything: culture, history, nature, and beautiful scenery. We explored this part of the island on our own, and it quickly became a standout experience.

You can totally DIY this day if you enjoy a bit of exploring at your own pace. Or, if you’d rather just relax and be guided through it, there’s also a great tour option (more on that below 👇

Start your morning at the colorful Caudan Waterfront in Port Louis. Grab a coffee, check out the quirky umbrella alley and local artisan shops, and soak in the harbor views.

From there, walk into the heart of Port Louis. Pass through Chinatown, explore the lively Central Market, and maybe pick up a snack or two (try the gateaux piments!).

Then, make your way up to Fort Adelaide (La Citadelle). It’s a bit of a climb, but the panoramic view from the top is totally worth it. You’ll see the city on one side, the mountains on the other, and the ocean stretching out beyond.

After you’ve explored the capital, hop in the car and head toward Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden. Here you can stroll among giant lily ponds, palm trees, and shady green paths. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and a nice break from the busy city.

Just a few minutes away is the L’Aventure du Sucre Museum. Here you’ll learn all about the history of sugar production in Mauritius (which is more fascinating than it sounds). The museum is beautifully done and ends with a tasting of local unrefined sugars and rum — yes, please!

Wrap up your day with a scenic drive north to Cap Malheureux, one of the most photographed spots in Mauritius. You’ll find the charming Red Roof Church overlooking the sea, with views of Coin de Mire island in the distance. It’s quiet, peaceful, and a perfect place to end your day trip.

8. Discover the Wild South of Mauritius – A Scenic Route Featured in the Best Tours in Mauritius

The south of Mauritius feels like a whole different world – it’s wild, lush, and less touched by tourism. It’s a region full of natural wonders and jaw-dropping views. You can absolutely explore it on your own (like we did!), or opt for one of the best tours in Mauritius with a local driver who knows every hidden corner.

amazing view over South Mauritius from Ebony Forest

🥾 Doing It On Your Own

If you’re up for a day or two of exploring by car, the south of Mauritius is one of the most rewarding routes you can take. We loved every minute of it. Start early, and you can pack a lot in without rushing.

Here’s how to do it:

Visit the Trou aux Cerfs, a dormant volcano with panoramic views over the island. It’s the perfect way to start the day.

Head toward Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao), a sacred lake for the Hindu community in Mauritius. Even if you’re not religious, the statues and serene setting make it a must-see.

From there, make your way to Chamarel. Before you get to the famous 7-Coloured Earth, don’t miss the Ebony Forest Reserve. This was honestly one of our favorite places for us — a gorgeous conservation area with a guided boardwalk, native plants, and incredible views over Le Morne.

After your walk in the forest, check out the Chamarel Waterfall and the surreal Seven Coloured Earths. It’s touristy, yes, but still super unique.

If you still have time, swing by the Chamarel Rum Distillery. They offer tastings, and the setting is beautiful.

🕒 Duration: Full-day

🚘 What to bring: Snacks, water, sunscreen, hiking shoes (if stopping at Ebony Forest)

💡 Pro tip: Driving is fairly easy here, but roads near Chamarel are steep and winding — take it slow and enjoy the views.

🧭 Going With a Guide

Want to see the best of the south without worrying about directions, traffic, or parking? A full-day guided tour is the way to go. You’ll be picked up from your hotel and taken through a complete loop of the top sights with a local guide/driver who knows all the best stops, shortcuts, and viewpoints.

Here’s what the tour includes:

Visit the Trou aux Cerfs crater. See Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) and its statues. Take in Alexandra Falls and Black River Gorge viewpoint. Explore the Chamarel 7 Coloured Earths & waterfall. Optional stop at Chamarel Rum Distillery. Scenic stop for a view of Île aux Bénitiers.

9. Explore the South of Mauritius on a Quad Bike – Adventure Lovers’ Pick for the Best Tours in Mauritius

Okay, full disclosure — this is one of the adventures we didn’t get to do on our trip (😭), simply because we ran out of time. But it was definitely on our list, and after hearing rave reviews from other travelers, I’m pretty sure it’s one of the best tours in Mauritius.

A guided tour through the south of the island is one of the most exciting ways to explore places you’d probably never reach otherwise. Think bumpy backroads, winding coastlines and trails, sugarcane fields, and hidden beaches. It’s the kind of experience that feels a little off-the-grid — and a whole lot of fun.

You can choose from different routes and durations, but many tours include highlights like:

🌊 The Natural Bridge (Le Pont Naturel) – a dramatic cliff formation shaped by crashing waves

🏖️ La Cambuse & Le Bouchon Public Beaches – raw, beautiful, and perfect for a swim

🌳 Trails through lush forests, open countryside, and coastal paths

All of it is guided by a local who knows the area like the back of their hand — expect fun stories, hidden gems, and plenty of photo stops.

🕒 Duration: Tours range from 1 hour to 3+ hours

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Perfect for: Families, couples, groups of friends — anyone up for a little off-road adventure

🎒 What to bring: Closed shoes, water, sunscreen, a swimsuit (some tours include a swim stop), and clothes you don’t mind getting a little dusty

👉 Book your Quad Bike Tour HERE to make sure you don’t miss this unforgettable experience!

10. Discover Île aux Bénitiers

Île aux Bénitiers is by far one of our favorite places in Mauritius. A short boat ride from the main island brings you to this gorgeous spot in the southwest, where you’re greeted with epic views of Le Morne Brabant rising in the distance, and warm, shallow waters that seem to go on forever.

stunning Ile aux Benitier beach - one of the best tours in Mauritius

The best way to experience it? On a catamaran or speedboat tour that combines some of the myou’reonic highlights in one day.

Swim with wild dolphins in the open sea and visit the famous Crystal Rock, a stunning formation rising out of the turquoise water. Take in the breathtaking Le Morne Mountain from the water. Enjoy a BBQ lunch and drinks right on board or on the island.

After that, relax at Île aux Bénitiers, and if you wander from the main dock area, you’ll find quieter stretches of sand perfect for justexisting.

Why we loved it:

This tour blends adventure and total chill, all wrapped up in jaw-dropping scenery. Swimming alongside dolphins in their natural habitat was honestly magical, and kicking back on a near-deserted part of the islet felt like we had found our own secret beach. No surprise this is considered one of the best tours in Mauritius.

🕒 Duration: Half-day or full-day

🚤 Perfect for: Wildlife lovers, couples, families, anyone who wants a mix of nature and beach

🎒 What to bring: Swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, waterproof bag, camera, flip-flops or water shoes

👉 Check out the boat tour we booked HERE.

Final Thoughts on the Best Tours in Mauritius

If I had to choose just a few experiences from this list, I’d book a catamaran cruise to Île aux Bénitiers, hike Le Morne Brabant with a guide, and spend a day exploring the southwest of the island. Together, they showcase some of the very best of Mauritius, from its incredible beaches and turquoise lagoons to its dramatic mountains and lush interior.

That said, every traveler is different. Whether you’re looking for adventure, wildlife, or simply a relaxing day on the water, there’s a tour here for every travel style. I hope this guide helps you find the experiences that make your trip to Mauritius just as memorable as ours.

So take your pick, follow your curiosity, and get ready to fall in love with Mauritius. Just like we did.
