The Bocas del Toro Archipelago consists of nine main islands and dozens of smaller islets scattered across the Caribbean coast of Panama. Isla Colon is the largest and most developed island, with Bocas Town serving as the main gateway for most visitors.

Here you’ll find restaurants, hotels, supermarkets, ATMs, and tour operators, making it the perfect base for exploring the surrounding islands.

The island is easy to navigate thanks to its single main road, which branches off toward Bluff Beach and Paunch Beach on one side and Boca del Drago and Starfish Beach on the other. Isla Colon also has its own airport, making it the easiest island in the archipelago to reach.

Is it Worth Visiting Isla Colon?

Absolutely. We ended up spending five days on Isla Colon, and it was one of the few places in Panama where we truly slowed down. Instead of rushing from one attraction to another, our days were filled with boat trips to nearby islands, afternoons on quiet beaches, amazing dinners, and evenings listening to the sounds of the jungle from our eco-lodge.

Unlike many Caribbean destinations, Isla Colon hasn’t been taken over by large all-inclusive resorts. Instead, you’ll find boutique hotels, eco-lodges, colorful streets, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy to disconnect.

Why We Loved Isla Colon

We visited Isla Colon at the end of May, during Panama’s official rainy season, and honestly, it turned out to be one of our favorite stops in the country. Most evenings brought a tropical downpour, but by morning the skies were usually clear again, leaving everything fresh, green, and incredibly vibrant.

Instead of staying in the busy center of Bocas Town, we chose an eco-lodge near Bluff Beach, surrounded by the sounds of the jungle. Waking up to birds singing and taking boat trips to nearby islands made us slow down and appreciate the Caribbean lifestyle in a way we hadn’t expected.

Getting around sometimes took a little more effort, especially since many of the island’s best beaches and attractions are spread out. But rather than seeing that as an inconvenience, we felt it made the experience even more authentic. Every drive led us to another quiet beach, small local restaurant, or hidden corner of the island that we might otherwise have missed.

If you’re looking for luxury resorts and a packed itinerary, Isla Colon may not be the right destination. But if you enjoy slow travel, nature, and discovering places at your own pace, it’s easy to understand why we ended up wishing we had even more time here.

Is Isla Colon Safe?

Isla Colon and Bocas del Toro province are considered safe for travelers, expats, and digital nomads, with very low incidences of theft or violent crime. 

Just like anywhere else in the world, it’s important to avoid going out in the dark.  It’s also advisable not to carry large sums of money with you, as it can attract unwanted attention. Always be vigilant and aware of your surroundings. 

We found the local people to be very friendly, relaxed, and happy, always ready to help and provide tips. We have visited secluded beaches and remote hiking trails and felt very safe.

Is Isla Colon Expensive?

Compared to many Caribbean destinations, Isla Colón offers excellent value for money. You can easily find hostel beds, comfortable boutique hotels, and affordable local restaurants without spending a fortune. While organized tours and boat trips can increase your budget, accommodation and food are generally cheaper than in Costa Rica or many other Caribbean islands.

Best Time to Visit Isla Colon

Isla Colon is an ideal year-round destination, offering different experiences depending on the time of year. 

The best time to visit Isla Colon, Panama, is during the dry season, which runs from December to mid-April. This period is also the high season and, therefore, the busiest. Expect beautiful Caribbean weather with a few rainy days now and then.

May to June is considered the low season in Bocas del Toro. Expect rainy days and a few sunny days. Some accommodations and restaurants are closed during this time, and few tourists are around.

July is the rainiest month in Bocas del Toro. It can rain on and off all day for several days. The transition to the dry season begins in August, with sunnier days and less rain.

September to November are also considered good months to visit, with dry and sunny days. However, expect some heavy rainfall.

We visited Isla Colon in late May and enjoyed sunny days throughout our stay. Although a few clouds appeared, they swiftly dissipated, allowing the warm sun to dominate the skies. Even though it rained every single night, the mornings were glorious, sunny, and welcoming.

How to Get to Isla Colon?

Getting to Isla Colon is fairly straightforward and can be done by either air or boat. Most travelers arrive through Bocas Town, the island’s main town.

The most common and convenient way to get to Isla Colon from Panama City is by domestic flight. Air Panama offers regular flights to Bocas del Toro from Panama City. The flight takes about one hour.

Flights usually cost between USD 50 and USD 150 one way, depending on the season and how far in advance you book.

If you’re coming from David, you can take a bus or private shuttle to the port town of Almirante, which takes about 4-5 hours. From Almirante, you’ll take a boat to Isla Colon (Bocas Town), which takes around 30-45 minutes.

If you’re coming from Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, you can take a boat from the Cahuita/Manzanillo area to Isla Colon.

Those who prefer a more comfortable and direct route can book private shuttles or tour packages from Panama City, Boquete or Costa Rica. Those usually include pick-up from your hotel, a shuttle to the border (or directly to Almirante) and a boat transfer to Isla Colon. This option can be more expensive but provides a hassle-free, door-to-door service. 

Getting Around Isla Colon

Getting around Isla Colon is relatively easy, and there are a variety of options depending on your preferences and where you’re staying.

The water taxis are the primary mode of transport for traveling between the islands in the Bocas del Toro Archipelago. Those are typically shared with other passengers, but private rides are available for a higher fee. The water taxi station is located in Bocas Town.

Few taxis are available in Bocas Town and are a convenient way to get around the main island of Isla Colon. You can find them near Simon Bolivar Park.

Bicycles are one of the most popular ways to get around Isla Colon, especially for those who want to explore at their own pace while enjoying the island’s tropical scenery.

Renting a motorbike or scooter is another popular option for visitors who want to cover more things to do on Isla Colón.

If you’re based in Bocas Town, you can easily explore the town on foot. Walking is the best way to stroll along the waterfront, check out the local shops, or head to a nearby restaurant. 

To get from Parque Bolívar in Bocas Town to Bluff Beach, you’ll need to use a local bus or minivan. There isn’t a fixed schedule, but you should be able to find a minivan leaving Bocas Town roughly every hour.

To get from Bocas Town to Playa del Drago, you’ll head to Parque Bolivar and embark on a minivan. If you don’t see any specific signs for Playa del Drago or Playa Estrella, you can ask the driver if he is heading in that direction.

Where to Stay on Isla Colon?

Hotel Bocas Town: A comfortable, mid-range option right in the center of town, perfect for easy access to restaurants, shops, and nightlife.

Bocas Paradise Hotel: Offers modern rooms with balconies and ocean views, ideal for travelers who want a bit of comfort and style while staying close to the ferry terminal.

Klika Bocas del Toro (formerly Selina Hostel): A vibrant, social hostel with both private rooms and dorms, perfect for meeting other travelers and enjoying a community-oriented vibe.

Bluff Beach

Along the road leading to Bluff Beach on the eastern side of Isla Colón, you’ll find several accommodation options set between the jungle and the ocean. The area is particularly popular with surfers and travelers looking for a quieter part of the island, and there are a few restaurants and beach bars nearby. Because of the powerful waves and strong currents, swimming at Bluff Beach can be unsafe. Still, it’s a fantastic place for long beach walks, relaxing in the sun, or exploring the surrounding jungle trails.

For a nature-filled jungle experience, Hummingbird is a standout choice. Nestled in the greenery, it offers a cozy and tranquil stay with easy access to the beach and surrounding trails.

If you’re traveling with family or a group, the Jungle Beach 2-Bedroom Cottage provides space, privacy, and the chance to wake up steps from the sand while enjoying a fully equipped home-style stay.

For a more boutique and modern experience, the S Boutique Hotel at Playa Bluff is a great choice. It offers stylish rooms, serene ocean views, and a relaxing beachfront atmosphere. Perfect for unwinding after a day exploring the islands.

We picked a cottage at the edge of the jungle next to the stunning Bluff Beach. The surrounding area was unspoiled and untouched, and the road leading to it was in such poor condition that our journey was quite an adventure.

However, once we arrived, all our worries seemed to fade away. The remote location, surrounded by jungle with no one else around, and the number of sloths and monkeys we spotted made our stay truly memorable.

Where to Eat on Isla Colon?

If you want to taste the Caribbean and Panamanian flavors that make Isla Colon a unique destination, you must try local food. Local restaurants and beachfront eateries in Bocas Town, like El Limón and Bocas Brewery, offer many local dishes.

For a more authentic experience, try small family-run restaurants or “fondas“ that serve traditional Panamanian food.

Street vendors also sell snacks like empanadas (fried pastries filled with meat or cheese), fresh coconut, and tropical fruit.

Coffee in Panama is grown in various regions, and Bocas del Toro is one of the lesser-known areas for coffee cultivation. Be sure to try local Panamanian coffee if you enjoy a good brew. You can often find it in cafes around Isla Colon.

The Best Things To Do On Isla Colon, Bocas del Toro

1. Island Hopping

Checking out the surrounding islands is one of the best things to do in Isla Colon. While Isla Colon boasts some of the most stunning beaches in the archipelago, island hopping is a key activity in Bocas del Toro. The best part is that it’s easy to do. 

You can book a boat tour online or arrange it through your accommodation. The easiest way is to go to the water taxi area, ask for a boat, pay the fee, wait for other passengers, and then you’ll be good to go.

Isla Carenero (Caranero Island) is the nearest island to Bocas Town and is only a few minutes away by boat. It’s a small island, so you can easily hike around the entire island and enjoy some time at the beach. 

After your visit, head to the small village on the island’s southern end, where you can arrange for someone to take you back to Colon. If you’re feeling hungry, make sure to stop by Leaf Eaters Cafe. It’s best to plan for a half-day trip to this island.

Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park (Bastimentos Island), located nearby, offers a pristine coastline adorned with secluded, untouched beaches. You can spend time at the Red Frog beach, hike through the jungle and look for the red frog. There are also a few beach bars where you can grab a meal or rent surfboards for an exhilarating surfing experience. The choices will keep you busy for a full day. 

Cayo Zapatilla (Zapatilla Islands) consists of two stunning uninhabited islands. Picture being surrounded by palm trees, soft white sand, turquoise waters, and the soothing sounds of nature. While the boat tour only stops at one of the islands, it will be enough to get a glimpse of this amazing place!

2. Hit the Waves at Bluff Beach

If there’s one beach you shouldn’t miss on Isla Colon, it’s Bluff Beach. Stretching for about 2.5 miles (4 km) along the island’s east coast, this wild beach is framed by swaying palm trees, lush jungle, and the powerful waves of the Caribbean Sea. It’s easily one of the most beautiful beaches we visited in Bocas del Toro.

If you’re staying in Bocas Town, you can rent a bike and cycle to Bluff Beach. The scenic coastal road offers beautiful Caribbean views, although the ride takes around an hour and parts of the road are quite rough. Alternatively, local minivans leave from Central Park and reach the beach in about 30 minutes.

We stayed near Bluff Beach for several nights. Waking up surrounded by the sounds of the jungle made the experience even more special. Every day, we enjoyed long walks along the nearly empty beach, watching the huge waves crash onto the shore. It felt peaceful, remote, and wonderfully untouched.

Although Bluff Beach looks incredibly inviting, it’s not considered safe for swimming because of the strong currents and powerful waves. During our stay, we only walked along the shoreline and cooled off in ankle-deep water.

If you want to swim, it’s much safer to choose one of the calmer beaches around Isla Colon or relax in your hotel’s swimming pool.

If you’re an experienced surfer, however, Bluff Beach is one of the island’s top surf spots, with consistent waves attracting surfers throughout the year.

3. Hike to La Piscina Beach

If you’re looking to escape the crowds, hiking to La Piscina was one of our favorite experiences on Isla Colon. Tucked away beyond the northern end of Bluff Beach, this hidden swimming spot feels like a secret corner of the island that many visitors never reach.

The adventure begins at Mimbitimbi, where you’ll find the entrance to the Jungle Highway Trail. The path follows the coastline through dense tropical jungle. It is well-maintained, with clear signs marking the way. Whenever the trail splits, simply follow the wider, better-maintained path.

One of the best parts of the hike is the wildlife. As we walked through the jungle, we could hear howler monkeys echoing through the trees. Colorful birds and tiny frogs filled the forest with sound. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a sloth resting high in the canopy.

Finally, you’ll reach La Piscina, a small natural bay protected from the rough Caribbean waves. Thanks to its calm, crystal-clear water, it’s the perfect place to cool off with a swim or simply relax while surrounded by lush tropical scenery.

If you continue past La Piscina, the trail eventually ends at the Blue Lagoon, another beautiful swimming spot with clear turquoise water that’s well worth the extra walk.

If you don’t feel like hiking, you can also reach La Piscina by renting an ATV from Flying Pirates. While it’s a more expensive option, it’s also the quickest and easiest way to explore this side of the island.

4. Experience the Magic of Bioluminescence

One of the most unique experiences in Bocas del Toro is witnessing the magical glow of bioluminescence. The archipelago’s warm, nutrient-rich waters provide ideal conditions for tiny marine organisms called dinoflagellates, which emit a blue-green glow when disturbed.

The best chance of seeing this natural phenomenon is on dark nights with little moonlight, particularly during the drier months between December and April, although sightings are never guaranteed.

Several local operators offer guided evening boat tours that take visitors to the best locations around the archipelago. As the boat moves through the water—or as you paddle or swim—the glowing organisms light up, creating a truly unforgettable spectacle.

Some tours also visit more secluded areas around Isla Bastimentos or the Zapatilla Cays, where the lack of artificial light makes the experience even more impressive.

5. Explore Bocas Town

Every visit to Isla Colon starts in Bocas Town, the colorful heart of the Bocas del Toro archipelago. While it’s the busiest place on the island, it still feels refreshingly authentic. Instead of polished resorts and perfectly paved streets, you’ll find colorful Caribbean buildings, local shops, street vendors, and a laid-back atmosphere that makes you want to slow down.

One of the best ways to experience Bocas Town is simply by wandering its streets. We loved strolling along the waterfront, watching water taxis come and go, browsing the small souvenir shops, and stopping for fresh seafood or a coffee whenever something caught our eye.

Don’t expect a picture-perfect tropical town. Some buildings are weathered and the roads can be a little rough. Life moves at its own pace. But that’s exactly what gives Bocas Town its character. It feels genuine rather than touristy.

The town is also a fascinating blend of Afro-Caribbean, Indigenous, and Latino cultures, reflected in its food, music, and friendly locals. If you’d like to learn more about its history and culture, you can also join a guided walking tour.

When hunger strikes, head toward the water taxi terminal. Here you’ll find everything from local eateries serving fresh seafood to international restaurants and lively waterfront bars.

6. Look for Starfish at Starfish Beach (Playa Estrella)

If you’re searching for calm, turquoise water instead of crashing waves, Starfish Beach (Playa Estrella) is the perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon. Located on the northern side of Isla Colon, this beautiful beach is famous for the large number of bright orange and red starfish that can often be spotted in the shallow, crystal-clear water.

There are two easy ways to get here. You can join a boat tour from Bocas Town, which often combines Starfish Beach with Bird Island (Isla Pájaros). Or take the local minivan from Central Park. The bus runs approximately every hour and drops you off at Boca del Drago. From there, a scenic 15-minute walk along the coast leads to Starfish Beach.

The walk itself is worth the trip. Palm trees line the trail and small hidden coves appear along the shoreline. You’ll find plenty of quiet spots to stop before reaching the main beach.

Once you arrive, you’ll notice the atmosphere changes. Starfish Beach is especially popular with local families, particularly on weekends, giving it a fun and lively Caribbean vibe. There are several beachfront restaurants serving fresh seafood, along with sun loungers and water activities if you’d like to spend the entire day here.

The biggest attraction, however, is the incredible number of starfish scattered across the shallow water. We had never seen so many in one place before. Watching them resting on the sandy seabed was one of our favorite memories from Isla Colon.

Please admire them responsibly. Never remove a starfish from the water, even for a quick photo. These delicate creatures can only survive for a few minutes outside the water, and handling them causes unnecessary stress that can be fatal.

7. Discover Isla Pajaros (Bird Island)

Just a short boat ride from Starfish Beach lies Isla Pájaros (Bird Island), a small rocky islet that’s home to one of the largest seabird colonies in the Bocas del Toro archipelago.

The island is a protected nesting site for pelicans, frigatebirds, swallows, and many other seabirds. It’s also the only place in Panama where you can see the elegant Red-billed Tropicbird. It’S instantly recognizable by its bright red bill and incredibly long white tail feathers.

The best time to visit is late in the afternoon, when thousands of birds return from the sea to spend the night on the island. Watching them circle above the cliffs before landing is an unforgettable sight for bird lovers and photographers alike.

If you’re already visiting Starfish Beach, it’s well worth asking one of the local boat operators for a ride to Bird Island. Boats regularly depart from both Starfish Beach and Boca del Drago, making it an easy and affordable addition to your day.

One of our favorite parts of visiting Isla Colón was discovering the local food scene. Thanks to the island’s Caribbean influences, many dishes are prepared with fresh seafood, coconut, tropical fruits, and local spices.

Most evenings we ended up at small local restaurants near the waterfront, ordering whatever fish had been caught that day. Simple, fresh, and incredibly flavorful, it was some of the best seafood we had during our trip to Panama.

Here are a few dishes you shouldn’t miss:

Pescado Frito – Fresh catch of the day served whole with coconut rice, fried plantains, or salad. This quickly became one of our favorite meals on the island.

Rondón – A traditional Afro-Caribbean seafood stew cooked with coconut milk, root vegetables, and local spices.

Tamal de Maíz – Corn dough filled with chicken or pork, wrapped in banana leaves and steamed.

Ceviche – Fresh fish or shrimp marinated in lime juice with onions, cilantro, and peppers.

Coconut Rice – The perfect side dish that accompanies many seafood meals.
