Bocas del Toro is a wonderful destination to visit year-round, each season offering something unique.
If you’re looking for the best time to go, the dry season, from December to mid-April, is perfect. This is also the high season, so expect more visitors, but the weather is beautiful with only an occasional rain shower.
From May to June, things quiet down as the low season begins. While you can expect a few sunny days, the rainier weather means fewer tourists. Some accommodations and restaurants may be closed.
July is the wettest month, with days of on-and-off rain. But don’t worry; the island will start to transition back to dry weather by August, with more sun and less rain.
September to November is also a great time to visit, with plenty of sunny days, though occasional heavy rain might still surprise you.
We visited Bocas del Toro in late May and were lucky to enjoy sunny days throughout our stay. A few clouds would roll in now and then, but they quickly passed, leaving the warm sun shining brightly. While it did rain every night, the mornings were nothing short of perfect—clear, sunny, and inviting.
How to Get to Bocas del Toro
Getting to Bocas del Toro is pretty easy, and you can reach it either by air or boat. Most travelers typically arrive through Bocas Town, the main town on Isla Colón.
The most common and convenient way to get there from Panama City is by taking a domestic flight. Air Panama operates regular flights to Bocas del Toro, and the flight takes just about an hour. Depending on the season and how early you book, flights usually range from $50 to $150 one way.

If you’re coming from David, take a bus or private shuttle to Almirante, which is about a 4-5 hour ride. You can also travel by bus from Panama City to Almirante, though it takes around 9 hours.
Once in Almirante, take a boat to Isla Colón, a scenic 30-45 minute ride.
Traveling from Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica? You can take a boat from the Cahuita or Manzanillo area directly to Isla Colón—an incredibly beautiful journey.

We chose a cozy cottage right on the edge of the jungle, steps away from the beautiful Bluff Beach on Isla Colón. The area was untouched and peaceful, far removed from the hustle and bustle of Bocas Town. The surrounding jungle came alive with sloths, monkeys and parrots, making our stay feel unforgettable.

Isla Carenero
Just across the bay from Bocas Town, Isla Carenero is known for its beautiful beaches and laid-back vibe. It’s a great place to stay peacefully while still being close to the action.

Isla Bastimentos
A quieter, more relaxed island, ideal for eco-lodges and boutique hotels.

If you want a fuller experience, 5–7 days is ideal—you’ll have time to visit multiple islands, relax on hidden beaches, and try activities like surfing, jungle hikes, and boat tours.
Spend a week or more, and you can truly unplug, soak in the laid-back island life, and discover the quieter corners of Bastimentos and beyond.
The Best Things to Do in Bocas del Toro, Panama
1. Island Hopping
Island hopping is one of the best ways to experience Bocas del Toro, and it’s easy to organize. You can book a tour online or through your accommodation, but the simplest way is to head to the water taxi area in Bocas Town, find a boat, pay the fee, and wait for a few other passengers. Then, you’re off to explore!
Isla Colón is the main island and hub for transportation, accommodations, and most attractions in the area.
Just a short boat ride away is Isla Carenero, a tiny island perfect for a half-day trip. Walk around the island, enjoy peaceful beaches, and grab a bite at Leaf Eaters Cafe. To return to Isla Colón, head to the village on the southern end to arrange a boat ride back.
Isla Bastimentos offers a more adventurous experience, with untouched beaches and wild jungle. Visit Red Frog Beach, where you can hike through the forest in search of the famous red frogs, grab a bite at beach bars, or rent a surfboard for some fun on the waves. A full day on this island will keep you busy!

It felt like stepping into a real-life jungle. As we made our way along the trail, we kept our eyes peeled for wildlife, and we were lucky enough to spot a few sloths lazily hanging out in the trees—such a cool moment!

If you’re looking for the most beautiful beach in Bocas del Toro, Bluff Beach is it—hands down. This 2.5-mile stretch of orange sand, framed by tall palm trees and the powerful surf, is absolutely breathtaking.
While the waves are stunning to watch, Bluff Beach isn’t the best for swimming because of the strong currents. It’s more of a place to wander along the shoreline, soak up the sun, and appreciate the raw beauty of nature. Trust me, don’t underestimate the ocean here; the waves can be pretty intense, and it’s easy to get swept away if you’re not careful.
We stayed nearby, and even though we only ventured into the water up to our ankles, the long walks along the beach were magical. And, if you’re into surfing, Bluff Beach is definitely one of the top spots to catch some incredible waves in Bocas del Toro.
5. Surf in Bocas del Toro
Bocas del Toro is a hidden gem for surfers, offering a mix of surf spots suitable for all levels, from beginners to seasoned pros.

One of the most popular spots is Playa Bluff on Isla Colón, known for its powerful breaks and larger waves—perfect for more experienced surfers.
If you’re a beginner, Starfish Beach on Isla Colón offers gentler waves, ideal for learning and practicing.
For those looking for something more remote, Red Frog Beach on Isla Bastimentos is a favorite, with a good mix of breaks and a fun, less crowded atmosphere. The waves here are perfect for intermediate surfers.

From hearty sancocho (a flavorful chicken soup with root vegetables) to patacones (crispy fried plantains) served with just about anything, the food here is comforting and full of flavor.
