Maybe it’s because they didn’t spend enough time there, or perhaps it’s due to the lack of infrastructure, which can make the experience a bit less convenient for some.
You need to understand that Bocas del Toro isn’t a destination where you can simply step out of the accommodation and find a beach. To truly experience the best beaches in Bocas del Toro, you’ll need to put in a little effort. It’s not always easy to get to them, but with some research and determination, you’ll soon discover some hidden gems.
Some beaches are known for their strong waves, which might not be the typical “sunbathing vacation” experience you expect. But that’s exactly what makes Bocas del Toro unique – it’s not about convenience but about the adventure of finding those quiet, stunning spots that are worth the effort.

1. Bluff Beach (Playa Bluff) – Isla Colon
I have to start by sharing my absolute favorite spot in Bocas del Toro: Playa Bluff. This 2.5-mile (4-kilometer) stretch of golden sand, framed by tall palm trees on one side and powerful waves on the other, is a sight I’ll never forget.
During our stay, we nestled into a charming jungle cottage just a stone’s throw from the beach. It soon became our little slice of paradise. The solitude of the place was incredible – it felt like we had the entire beach to ourselves.
Every day, we took long walks along the shore, soaking in the peaceful vibe. There was something magical about the rhythm of the waves and the untouched beauty around us.
Bluff Beach is truly one of the best beaches in the Bocas del Toro archipelago, a peaceful escape that stays with you long after you’ve left.
How to Get to Bluff Beach
To reach Bluff Beach from Bocas Town, you can rent a bike and enjoy the picturesque ride along the east coast. The road offers stunning views of the Caribbean Sea, but be warned, the road is pretty bumpy, and it’ll take you about an hour to get there.
Alternatively, you can catch a minivan from the central park on the main street in Bocas Town, which will take you to the beach in around 30 minutes.
What to Do on Bluff Beach
Bluff Beach isn’t ideal for swimming due to its strong currents, but it’s the perfect place for long walks, sunbathing, and soaking in its natural beauty. Be cautious, though; the ocean here can be powerful, and it’s easy to get swept out if you’re not careful.
For surfers, Bluff Beach offers some of the best waves on Isla Colón, but it’s definitely a spot for the experienced. If you’re up for the challenge, the surf here will not disappoint.
2. Starfish Beach (Playa Estrella) – Isla Colon
Those searching for tranquil, crystal-clear waters should venture to the opposite side of the island, where they will find Starfish Beach.
It’s a serene and peaceful spot, although it’s also a favorite among locals who enjoy spending weekends here with their families and friends.
Along the beach, you’ll find a selection of charming beach bars serving up the catch of the day. Relax in a hammock, savor a fresh meal, and take in the incredible views of the beach and the ocean beyond.
The main attraction at Starfish Beach is, of course, the starfish! The shallow waters are home to these beautiful creatures, and you can often spot them just beneath the surface. I’ve never witnessed so many in only one place!
Remember not to remove starfish from the water. These fascinating creatures can only survive 3 to 5 minutes out of the water, and stress can be fatal. So, no matter how tempting the photo opportunity, please resist.
How to Get to Starfish Beach
A great way to access this beach is to embark on a boat tour from Bocas Town, which typically includes visiting both Starfish Beach and Bird Island (Isla Pájaros).
A more budget-friendly option is to take aminivan from the central park in Bocas Town, which departs hourly. The minivan journey ends at Boca del Drago Beach (Playa Boca del Drago).
From there, take a 15-minute stroll to reach the breathtaking Starfish Beach.
As you walk along the picturesque pathway to Starfish Beach, you will be greeted by stunning palm trees that line the way.
Note: Keep in mind that the last minivan back to Bocas Town leaves at 7 PM, so plan accordingly.
What to Do at Starfish Beach
With calm, shallow waters and soft, white sand, Starfish Beach is perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The clear waters are teeming with marine life, including small fish and even the occasional ray.
You can rent sun chairs, kick back, and enjoy the scenery, or dive into the water to explore the vibrant underwater world.
For those seeking more adventure, there are various exciting water activities available, such as the inflatable tube ride. It’s super fun, so hold on tight because the boat’s speed will definitely test your balance!
3. La Piscina Beach – Isla Colon
If you have some extra time to explore the Bocas del Toro Archipelago and you’re in the mood for a little adventure, I highly recommend discovering La Piscina Beach.
Located at the northern tip of Bluff Beach, this secluded spot features two stunning bays with crystal-clear waters. The serene, shallow bay invites you to take a refreshing dip and immerse yourself in nature’s beauty.
How to Get to La Piscina Beach
Start your hike from Bluff Beach. The trailhead is located at the northernmost point of the beach. Follow the “Jungle Highway” trail, which winds along the coast.
The trail is well-maintained, with clear signage and easy terrain. If you encounter a fork in the path, simply choose the better-maintained route.
Along the way, you’ll be surrounded by the sounds of howler monkeys, colorful birds, and the occasional sloth. Finally, you’ll spot a sign directing you to La Piscina.
If you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can continue straight ahead to the end of the trail to discover the Blue Lagoon – another fantastic spot for a swim in crystal-clear waters.
For a quicker option, you can rent an ATV from Flying Pirates. While it may not be the most cost-effective choice, it’s certainly the easiest way to skip the hike and get to the beach faster.
What to Do on La Piscina Beach
La Piscina is a perfect spot for swimming, thanks to its calm, shallow waters. The clear waters are also ideal for snorkeling, offering vibrant marine life and coral reefs to discover.
It’s a great place to relax, sunbathe, and enjoy the quiet beauty of the surroundings. With its tranquil vibe, you’re likely to have the place all to yourself.
4. Red Frog Beach – Isla Bastimentos
Red Frog Beach is one of the most iconic and best beaches in Bocas del Toro, and for good reason.
With its soft golden sand, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant tropical surroundings, it’s a paradise that feels straight out of a postcard.
Named after the tiny but incredibly cute red poison dart frogs that live in the area (don’t worry, they’re not dangerous), this beach offers a perfect blend of relaxation, wildlife, and beautiful scenery.
How to Get to Red Frog Beach
To reach Red Frog Beach, simply hop on a water taxi from Bocas Town on Isla Colón—the boat ride takes about 15-20 minutes. Once you land on Isla Bastimentos, a quick 5-minute walk will get you to the beach.
From Old Bank on Bastimentos Island, it’s about a 5-kilometer trek through the jungle to reach the beach.
Along the way, you’ll be treated to the island’s lush surroundings and the sounds of nature.
The path can be a bit tricky to follow at times, but it’s definitely doable with a little attention. Also, the trail is a little uneven, so be sure to wear sturdy shoes. Just make sure to bring plenty of water and take your time to enjoy the journey.
What to Do at Red Frog Beach
For those looking for a bit of excitement, the beach also offers some decent waves for surfing. It’s not as intense as some of the other spots, but it’s a great place for beginners to catch their first waves.
Of course, one of the biggest highlights of the beach is the tiny, colorful red frogs. While they’re small and a little tricky to spot, you might catch a glimpse of one hopping around if you take a walk on the jungle trails or explore the area carefully. It’s like a scavenger hunt with nature!
Note: Apparently, there is an entry fee for Red Frog Beach, but I can’t say for sure. During our visit in May (low season), there was hardly anyone around, so we didn’t end up paying.
5. Wizard Beach – Isla Bastimentos
If you’re looking for a secluded spot, Wizard Beach is one of the best beaches in Bocas del Toro. It is known for its peaceful vibe and natural beauty. It’s a great spot if you’re looking for a quiet, picturesque place to relax and unwind.
Keep an eye out for those cute little red frogs along the jungle trails – they’re usually hiding out in the underbrush.
How to Get to Wizard Beach
You can hike from Old Bank on the island of Bastimentos to Wizard Beach, which takes around 30 minutes.
If you’re coming from Red Frog Beach, you can follow the jungle trail that connects the two beaches. The trail takes you through lush vegetation, and it’s a great way to discover the island’s natural beauty.
However, be prepared – it can be a bit tricky to follow at times. We definitely had our fair share of getting a little lost and tracked back! The trail was pretty overgrown when we visited, so we ended up playing a bit of “Where’s the path?” along the way.
Since the path is uneven, make sure to wear sturdy shoes. Trust me, your feet will thank you once you start navigating the jungle!
What to Do at Wizard Beach
The beach’s main draw is its peaceful, secluded vibe, perfect for relaxing and taking in the stunning scenery. Swimming can be a bit risky here due to the rough waves, so it’s not the best spot for a swim. However, if you’re into surfing, you’ll find some decent waves to ride!
6. Polo Beach – Isla Bastimentos
Polo Beach is one of the most serene and picturesque spots on Isla Bastimentos. Surrounded by lush vegetation and towering palm trees, the beach offers soft sand and crystal-clear waters. It is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy nature.
It’s named after a local man, Polo, who’s practically a legend in the area. He often greets visitors with a warm smile and is known for offering a quick snack or a cold drink—of course, for a small fee. It’s his little touch that adds a personal, local vibe to the beach, and honestly, you might want to grab that drink just to hear his stories!
How to Get to Polo Beach
The most common way to reach Polo Beach is by boat from Bocas Town on Isla Colón. You can easily hire a water taxi, which takes about 15-20 minutes to get to Isla Bastimentos.
Once you’re dropped off, you’ll be just a 5-minute walk from Red Frog Beach. From there, the trail starts at the Red Frog Beach Island Resort. Follow the jungle path, and you’ll be on your way.
Just a heads-up—during high tide, the beach can get a little vanished, so it’s best to check the conditions before you go.
Not up for the hike? No worries! You can always ask your boatman to take you directly to Polo Beach. Just make sure to tell them where you’re headed, or you might end up somewhere completely different.
What to Do at Polo Beach
The clear, calm waters make Polo Beach a perfect spot for a swim or snorkeling. You can explore the underwater world, seeing colorful fish and marine life. Keep an eye out for sloth sightings as you relax or explore the beach. The area around Polo Beach is home to various wildlife, including monkeys and birds.
7. Carenero Beaches (Playas Carenero) – Isla Caranero
Some of the best beaches in Bocas del Toro are on Carenero Island, and they’re definitely among my favorites. Now, I wouldn’t call them “proper” beaches—they’re more like little beach patches scattered around the island, but they still offer all the charm you could want.
The vibe here is super chill, with soft golden sand and crystal-clear waters that feel like your own slice of paradise. It’s the perfect place to escape the crowds and unwind in peace.
The beaches are located on the east side of the island, while the accommodations are on the west side. The vibe on the east side is peaceful and remote, making it a great spot to relax.
How to Get to Isla Carenero
Getting to Isla Carenero is a breeze. It’s only a 1-2 minute water taxi ride from Isla Colón. The boatman will drop you off on the east side, where all the best beaches and scenic spots are.
To get back to Isla Colón, you’ve got two options: you can either wait for a boat to pass by (though it’s not always guaranteed), or walk to the nearby village area and ask one of the friendly locals for a ride. The locals are always willing to help, so don’t be shy!
What to Do on Isla Carenero
The east side of Carenero is perfect for swimming with calm, clear waters, and the beaches here are ideal for lounging in the sun. If you’re into surfing, the north side of the island has some pretty strong waves that make it a great place to catch a ride.
While the beaches are stunning, Carenero Island is also perfect for exploring. If you’re up for a little adventure, I highly recommend hiking the coastal trail. It’s an easy, laid-back walk that takes about 1-2 hours—just enough time to soak in some breathtaking views of the Caribbean. We ended up stopping every few minutes to snap pictures of the crystal-clear water and lush jungle—it’s hard to resist.
8. Cayo Zapatilla – Zapatilla Cays
Cayo Zapatilla is a beautiful, remote island and one of the best beaches in Bocas del Toro, holding a special place in my heart right after Bluff Beach. The island is part of the Zapatilla Cays, a pair of islands (Cayo Zapatilla I and II) known for their pristine, untouched beaches, crystal-clear waters, and rich wildlife.
These islands are nestled within the Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park, meaning they are protected and preserved.
How to Get to Cayo Zapatilla
To get to Cayo Zapatilla, you typically need to take a boat tour from Bocas Town on Isla Colón. Most tours include multiple stops for snorkeling, a delicious lunch, and sometimes even additional activities, giving you a full island experience.
We visited during the low season, so we had the luxury of sharing the boat with just one other couple, making it feel like we had our own private escape. The entire experience was laid-back and enjoyable, just what you want when heading to such a beautiful and remote spot.
What to Do on Cayo Zapatilla
Once you arrive, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into paradise. The best thing to do here is simply relax on the beach and soak up the tranquility. When we visited, the island was practically deserted, offering a peaceful vibe that’s hard to beat.
The waters around Cayo Zapatilla are perfect for swimming and snorkeling, making it an unforgettable experience.

Things to do: island hopping, hit the beaches, party in Bocas Town, snorkeling and scuba diving.
Book tours in advance: Popular activities like island hopping and snorkeling tours can fill up quickly during peak season, so book early.
Bring cash: Many places, especially on islands, prefer cash. ATMs are in Bocas Town, but it’s best to carry enough for island hopping.
Pack for the tropics: Lightweight, breathable clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and insect repellent are a must.
Internet: Wi-Fi is common in hotels and cafes but can be spotty, especially on remote islands.
Safety: While Bocas del Toro is generally safe, always keep your belongings secure and be mindful of your surroundings, especially at night. The police presence on the beaches in the Bocas del Toro islands is related to preventing theft and robbery. Like many popular tourist destinations, there have been occasional reports of petty crime, including theft of belongings such as bags, cameras, and phones, especially when tourists are distracted by the beach or water activities.

Getting to Bocas del Toro province is pretty easy, and you can reach it either by air or boat. Most travelers typically arrive through Bocas Town, the main town on Isla Colón.
The most common and convenient way to get there from Panama City is by taking a domestic flight. Air Panama operates regular flights to Bocas del Toro, and the flight takes just about an hour. Depending on the season and how early you book, flights usually range from $50 to $150 one way.

If you’re coming from David, take a bus or private shuttle to Almirante, which is about a 4-5 hour ride. You can also travel by bus from Panama City to Almirante, though it takes around 9 hours. Once in Almirante, take a boat to Isla Colón, a scenic 30-45 minute ride.
Traveling from Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica? You can take a boat from the Cahuita or Manzanillo area directly to Isla Colón—an incredibly beautiful journey.
For a more comfortable, direct option, consider booking private shuttles or tour packages that include hotel pick-up, shuttle service, and a boat transfer. This option is hassle-free, though more expensive.
If you’ve rented a car in Panama, you can ferry it over to Isla Colón for around $25. However, it is often easier and more cost-effective to leave your car in one of the secure parking lots near the docks in Almirante for just $3 per day.
The islands are small, and walking, biking, or using public transport is the best way to experience their laid-back vibe.

For a nature-filled jungle experience, Hummingbird is a standout choice. Nestled in the greenery, it offers a cozy and tranquil stay with easy access to the beach and surrounding trails.

We chose a cozy cottage right on the edge of the jungle, steps away from the beautiful Bluff Beach on Isla Colón. The area was untouched and peaceful, far removed from the hustle and bustle of Bocas Town. The surrounding jungle came alive with sloths, monkeys and parrots, making our stay feel unforgettable.

Klika Bocas del Toro (formerly Selina Hostel): A vibrant, social hostel with both private rooms and dorms, perfect for meeting other travelers and enjoying a community-oriented vibe.
Where to Stay on Isla Carenero
Just across the bay from Bocas Town, Isla Carenero is known for its beautiful beaches and laid-back vibe. It’s a great place to stay peacefully while still being close to the action.

The unspoiled beaches, the laid-back vibe, and the unique charm of the islands—once you take the time to explore and adjust, you’ll see why it’s truly one of Panama’s best-kept secrets.
